PhD Researcher in Quantum Thermometry

Glasgow, Glasgow City, United Kingdom National Physical Laboratory Full time
About the Role

Temperature is a fundamental quantity that plays a crucial role in various fields, including chemistry, biology, and technology. However, current temperature measurement methods have limitations, such as the need for periodic calibration and the challenge of measuring temperature on a sub-micron scale. This project aims to address these issues by developing a novel miniaturized on-chip approach using active quantum-confined semiconductor optical resonators.

Key Responsibilities
  • Design and model computer-based systems for temperature measurement
  • Fabricate and test prototypes using the National Physical Laboratory's facilities
  • Develop practical primary thermometry using active Ring Resonator Thermometry
  • Integrate all components, including source, resonator, and detector, on a single device
About You

We are seeking a highly motivated and talented PhD researcher with a strong background in physics, electrical engineering, or a related field. The ideal candidate will have a minimum of a 2:1 degree and desirable skills in experimental physics, integrated engineering, nanotechnology, and quantum mechanics.

About Us

The National Physical Laboratory is a world-leading centre of excellence that provides cutting-edge measurement science, engineering, and technology to underpin prosperity and quality of life in the UK. We are committed to diversity and equality of opportunity and welcome applications from candidates from diverse backgrounds.
