Position Overview

This role qualifies for a Golden Hello incentive of £2,750 for new employees who are not currently contracted with the Trust. This incentive will be distributed in three installments over a two-year timeframe. Eligibility for this incentive is restricted to new hires without existing employment contracts with the Trust. Additionally, this position includes financial enhancements for working during unsocial hours, including nights, weekends, and public holidays.

An exceptional opening has emerged for a Lead Substance Misuse Specialist to become part of the Offender Health Directorate at HMP Fosse Way. This facility is classified as a Category C Resettlement Prison.

HMP Fosse Way accommodates 1,715 inmates and emphasizes the rehabilitation of offenders and their successful reintegration into society. The prison comprises seven housing blocks spread across four floors, featuring a dedicated healthcare suite in the main building, along with additional multi-purpose rooms for group sessions or individual consultations.

Key Responsibilities

To assume a pivotal role in ensuring the effective and successful provision of Substance Misuse services within the Offender Health sector. This involves functioning as a senior practitioner within a multidisciplinary team in a correctional setting, delivering care to individuals facing complex substance misuse challenges, from their entry into the prison system to their return to the community, thereby reducing recidivism and enhancing the health and social functioning of inmates.

To deliver high-quality patient care through comprehensive assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation of care for individuals with substance misuse issues, adhering to both harm reduction and health promotion/recovery principles.

To provide mentorship and guidance to junior staff members.

To ensure the delivery of effective substance misuse care services for inmates, meeting established standards, Key Performance Indicators, and demonstrating value for money, while enhancing the mental health of individuals and positioning the service as a preferred provider for local commissioners.

Job Responsibilities

The Offender Health Care Group stands as one of the largest and most successful providers of prison healthcare in the UK. This Care Group delivers physical, mental health, and substance misuse healthcare services across prisons in the East Midlands, Lincolnshire, and Leicestershire.

Our Care Group serves seven prisons and a short-term holding facility. You will be part of a large peer group of over 400 healthcare professionals, benefiting from peer support, supervision, and outstanding opportunities for professional development. We also provide services within the Personality Disorder Pathway, including Therapeutic Communities (within prisons), Community and Prison Personality Disorder services, and specialized Veteran Services.

We are dedicated to collaborating with prison services, the national probation service, other healthcare providers, and our criminal justice system partners to enhance health outcomes and support justice in reducing re-offending behavior. The Offender Health Team genuinely believes in making a positive impact on the lives of offenders by delivering consistent, high-quality care in primary, mental health, and substance misuse services that are on par with those available outside of prison.

To coordinate and lead the team in providing clinical and psychosocial interventions.

To offer guidance and support to junior team members regarding care standards for patients.

To provide advice, guidance, and leadership concerning mental health and concurrent substance misuse, as well as clinical and managerial supervision to team members.

Qualifications

Essential

  • Current professional registration in nursing or social work.
  • Evidence of Continuing Professional Development related to substance misuse.
  • Equivalent knowledge and experience in delivering structured psychosocial interventions; relevant experience at band 5 level.

Desirable

  • Completion of a Non-Medical Prescribing Course (or willingness to undertake one).

Experience

Essential

  • Experience in community-based Substance Misuse multidisciplinary work.
  • Experience working with patients exhibiting challenging behaviors.
  • Experience in record keeping, report writing, and correspondence.

Desirable

  • Experience in a criminal justice setting.

Knowledge

Essential

  • Theoretical understanding of substance misuse and evidence-based psychosocial interventions.
  • Awareness of local and national substance misuse strategies, such as the recovery agenda.
  • Commitment to supporting equality and valuing diversity.

  • Familiarity with local networks that support the delivery of Substance Misuse services.

Skills

Essential

  • Ability to conduct comprehensive assessments.
  • Capability to assess and evaluate risks associated with substance misuse.
  • Proficiency in IT, including Word, Excel, and electronic patient record systems.
