An exceptional opportunity has emerged for a Substance Misuse Specialist to become part of the Offender Health Directorate at HMP Fosse Way, a Category C Resettlement Prison.
HMP Fosse Way accommodates 1,715 inmates, emphasizing the rehabilitation of offenders and their successful reintegration into society. The facility comprises 7 housing blocks across 4 levels, featuring a dedicated healthcare suite in the main building along with additional multi-purpose rooms suitable for group sessions or individual consultations.
Your role will involve delivering a comprehensive substance misuse through-care service for inmates, starting from their entry into the prison system and continuing through their transition back into the community, aiming to reduce re-offending rates and enhance the health and social functioning of the inmates.
You will ensure high-quality patient care by assessing, planning, implementing, and evaluating treatment for individuals facing substance misuse challenges, adhering to both harm reduction and health promotion/recovery objectives.
Main Responsibilities
Managing a caseload of often complex and challenging patients, you will provide a substance misuse through-care service that spans from initial entry into the prison system to community reintegration, ultimately aiming to diminish re-offending and improve the health and social functioning of the patients.
As part of a dedicated, passionate, and dynamic Substance Misuse Team, you will deliver exceptional patient care through comprehensive assessments, strategic planning, implementation, and evaluation of care for individuals with substance misuse issues, focusing on harm reduction and health promotion/recovery initiatives.
You will also provide guidance to junior staff by upholding professional standards and ensuring compliance with all relevant policies and procedures to guarantee the delivery of high-quality care.
The Substance Misuse Team operates within the Healthcare Department, which also offers Mental Health and Physical Health services, all collaborating to provide a holistic package of patient care.

Job Responsibilities
The Offender Health Care Group is among the largest and most successful providers of prison healthcare in the UK, delivering physical, mental health, and substance misuse healthcare services across various prisons.
We provide healthcare to multiple prisons and a short-term holding facility, with a large peer group of over 400 healthcare professionals offering access to peer support, supervision, and excellent learning and development opportunities. Our services also include the Personality Disorder Pathway, encompassing Therapeutic Communities within prisons, Community and Prison Personality Disorder services, and specialized Veteran Services.
We are dedicated to collaborating with prison services, the national probation service, and other healthcare providers to enhance health outcomes and support justice initiatives aimed at reducing re-offending behavior. The Offender Health Team is committed to making a positive impact on the lives of offenders by providing consistent, high-quality care in primary, mental health, and substance misuse services that are comparable to those available outside of prison.
Your role will involve contributing to the effective delivery of substance misuse health services for inmates, ensuring compliance with required standards and Key Performance Indicators, while demonstrating value for money and improving individual health outcomes.
Incentives
This position is eligible for a Golden Hello payment of £2,750 for new starters external to the Trust, payable in three installments over a two-year period. This payment is exclusively available to new hires without a prior employment contract with the Trust. Additionally, the role includes paid enhancements for unsocial hours worked during nights, weekends, and bank holidays.
Qualifications
Essential
- Current professional registration in nursing, social work, or equivalent knowledge and experience in delivering structured psychosocial interventions.
- Evidence of Continuing Professional Development related to substance misuse.
Experience

- Experience in community-related substance misuse multidisciplinary work, which may include substantial voluntary work or work in a related field.
- Experience working with patients exhibiting challenging behaviors.
- Experience managing your own workload within a team environment.
