About the Position

Balfour Beatty is a leading infrastructure group that operates in the construction and engineering sectors. We are currently seeking a highly skilled professional to oversee all technical and engineering aspects related to underground and tunnelling operations.

The successful candidate will play a pivotal role in managing the technical processes involved in the construction of tunnelling works. This includes:

  • Developing comprehensive construction sequences and methodologies for underground activities, including site installations and tunnelling operations.
  • Overseeing the delivery, assembly, launch, and dismantling of Tunnel Boring Machines (TBM).
  • Creating method statements for tunnelling and underground works.
  • Designing temporary works for tunnelling and underground projects.
  • Estimating costs, assessing risks, and planning work schedules associated with technical solutions.
  • Ensuring that safety risks are proactively managed and mitigated.
  • Leading a team of engineers and CAD technicians to support the execution of these tasks.
  • Ensuring the integrity and compliance of technical solutions with project specifications, delivering value for the client.
  • Collaborating with client design teams to ensure compatibility and buildability of designs.
  • Providing timely information to interface with other project scopes.
  • Supporting procurement and commercial teams in contracting relevant subcontractors and suppliers.
  • Managing subcontractor outputs and ECI works.
  • Assisting in the preparation of tender invitations for subcontracted works.
  • Liaising with marine technical teams to ensure cross-discipline consistency.
  • Providing input to planning and cost estimating teams as necessary.

Candidate Profile

We are looking for individuals who possess:

  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Proficiency in CAD software, including AutoCAD and Revit.

Qualifications & Experience

Essential qualifications include:

  • Experience in underground and tunnelling projects, particularly in technical roles within a contractor's organization.
  • Proven track record as an engineering, design, or methods manager on similar projects.
  • Strong understanding of Construction (Design and Management) Regulations 2015.

Desirable qualifications may include:

  • Certification as a Temporary Works Coordinator.
  • Experience with TBM bored tunnels and mechanical tunnel excavation.
  • Knowledge of instrumentation and monitoring techniques.
  • Familiarity with Pressure Equipment (Safety) Regulations 2016.
