Position Overview

The Centre for Environment, Fisheries and Aquaculture Science (Cefas) stands at the forefront of marine science and technology, delivering innovative solutions for environmental sustainability, biodiversity, and food security. We are offering an apprenticeship within our Analytical Chemistry division, where you will support the preparation and analysis of various pollutants in marine samples under laboratory conditions. This role will focus on laboratory assessments, including essential planning, data documentation, and maintenance of laboratory standards. Your work may involve handling diverse samples such as water, sediment, and biological specimens.

Our Analytical Chemistry team is composed of a diverse group of scientists dedicated to providing high-quality analytical services, data interpretation, and scientific guidance for a wide range of internal and external projects for both UK and international clients.

Role Responsibilities

This apprenticeship will enable you to acquire the skills and techniques necessary for safe laboratory practices and adherence to quality protocols. You will gain analytical expertise to assist with the daily operations of the Chemistry laboratories. Comprehensive training and supervision will be provided, but candidates should be self-driven, eager to learn, and capable of following instructions. During your apprenticeship, your responsibilities will include:

  • Preparation of biological samples, including the dissection of fish, shellfish, and marine mammals for the analysis of heavy metals and persistent organic pollutants, ensuring no cross-contamination occurs.
  • Engagement in sample processing and training in analytical methodologies for sample evaluation.
  • Assisting with general laboratory upkeep, including maintaining a clean and professional workspace, calibrating equipment, and preparing reagents.
  • Monitoring laboratory supplies and reagents, ensuring timely replenishment as needed.
  • Contributing to the management of sample storage and documentation.
  • Maintaining cleanliness and organization within the laboratories.
  • Adhering to relevant Health and Safety regulations and Quality Procedures, including strict compliance with CoSHH and Risk Assessments.

Additionally, Cefas reserves the right to assign additional duties and responsibilities appropriate to your grade. Team Leaders and management will communicate any changes, and a revised job description will be provided if necessary.

Candidate Requirements

To qualify for this apprenticeship position, you must demonstrate the following essential criteria:

  • A genuine enthusiasm for science.
  • A foundational understanding of chemistry as a scientific discipline.
  • Ability to work effectively as part of a team and possess strong communication skills.
  • Basic IT proficiency, with experience in standard Microsoft applications such as Word and Excel.
  • A commitment to continuous learning and personal development.
  • Exceptional attention to detail, with a methodical, patient, and organized approach to tasks.
  • Capability to show initiative, self-awareness, and adaptability to varying situations.
  • A minimum of 5 GCSEs (or equivalent) at grade C/4 or above, including Maths and English (evidence of qualifications will be required during pre-employment checks).

Qualifications
