Job Purpose

The primary objective of this role is to deliver extensive management and advanced technical guidance to users at Glasgow's Experimental MRI Centre (GEMRIC), which includes Principal Investigators, researchers, and students at various academic levels.

Provide expert technical knowledge in pre-clinical imaging and oversee the planning, design, execution, and safe conduct of MRI experiments.

Main Duties and Responsibilities
  1. Oversee all managerial functions of the laboratory, contributing to the strategic research direction, offering specialized advice and training to users, managing resources, scheduling scanning sessions, and ensuring compliance with health and safety regulations.

  2. Engage in specialized technical components of pre-clinical MRI research, taking a leading role in the planning and execution of research objectives aligned with the research strategy.

  3. Lead the identification and development of innovative research methodologies and bespoke approaches to enhance research outcomes.

  4. Utilize in-depth technical expertise to advise and train users on all technical aspects of the research. Supervise undergraduate and/or postgraduate students as necessary to optimize learning outcomes.

  5. Manage all operational aspects of the laboratory, including financial oversight, resource distribution, grant management, procurement, and financial forecasting.

  6. Establish, implement, and routinely review Standard Operating Procedures for users, ensuring adherence to legislative requirements, institutional policies, and best practices.

  7. Enhance the research profile and reputation of the University through contributions to high-quality publications, presentations at national and international conferences, and maximizing the societal and economic impact of research.

  8. Stay informed on advancements in relevant research and technical fields to ensure optimal contributions to research objectives.

  9. Document experimental results, including data analysis and interpretation, to publication standards. Maintain comprehensive databases and records, producing technical reports and papers.

  10. Conduct complex data analyses, identifying trends, issues, or anomalies, and present findings clearly to the research group, including actionable proposals for improvement.

  11. Troubleshoot intricate technical challenges, addressing issues related to the design and operation of technical resources and the data generated.

  12. Ensure daily management and compliance with relevant health and safety regulations and other legal requirements.

  13. Maintain all necessary records in accordance with established requirements, staying updated on legal changes relevant to the research group's work and advising group members accordingly.

  14. Collaborate with others, both within the broader College/Institute/School and with external contacts, to enhance the achievement of research goals and support the strategic objectives of the University.

  15. Contribute to outreach and recruitment initiatives of the University.

  16. Perform any other reasonable duties as assigned by the Head of School.

  17. Contribute to enhancing the University's international profile in alignment with the University’s Strategic Plan.

Knowledge, Qualifications, Skills and Experience Knowledge/Qualifications Essential:
  • A1. A degree at Scottish Credit and Qualification Framework level 9 or equivalent, including professional accreditation and relevant experience in a similar role.
  • A2. Extensive specialist technical knowledge in Imaging Physics, recognized as an authority in the field.
  • A3. In-depth understanding of relevant legislative requirements, particularly concerning health and safety.
  • A4. A PhD or higher degree in a relevant discipline is desirable, along with progress towards professional registration with the relevant body.
  • A5. Familiarity with in-vivo MR experiments is advantageous, including anesthesia and monitoring of physiological parameters, necessitating a Home Office personal license for animal research.
  • A6. Proven technical skills in Imaging Physics, ideally aligned with MR physics.
  • A7. Strong IT skills, including proficiency in relevant specialist software.

  • C1. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to interpret complex technical requirements and adapt communication styles to meet diverse needs.
  • C2. Strong team collaboration and people management abilities.
  • C3. Capability to plan and prioritize technical services to achieve long-term strategic objectives while delivering day-to-day operations.
Experience Essential:
  • E1. Significant analytical and problem-solving skills, with a high degree of accuracy and attention to detail in handling complex datasets.
  • E2. Relevant work experience in a similar research environment, demonstrating previous outputs and professional growth.
  • E3. Experience in developing research strategies, planning resource allocation, and achieving high-quality research outputs.
  • E4. Experience managing substantial budgets, including approving expenditures, negotiating purchases, and monitoring financial outflows.
  • E5. Proficiency in preparing data analyses and presentations to publication standards.
  • E6. Experience working independently to advance and achieve research objectives within set timelines.
Terms and Conditions

The salary for this position is Grade 7, ranging from £39,347 to £44,263 per annum. This is a full-time role (35 hours per week) and is permanent.
