Position Overview

The Imaging Physics Manager will oversee and provide expert guidance to users at Glasgow's Experimental MRI Centre (GEMRIC), including principal investigators, researchers, and students at various academic levels.

This role requires specialized knowledge in pre-clinical imaging, focusing on the planning, design, execution, and safe management of MRI experiments.

Key Responsibilities
  1. Manage all operational aspects of the laboratory, contributing to the strategic vision of research, offering specialized advice and training to users, managing resources, scheduling scanning sessions, and ensuring compliance with health and safety regulations.

  2. Lead the technical components of pre-clinical MRI research, playing a pivotal role in the planning and execution of research objectives aligned with the overarching research strategy.

  3. Identify and develop innovative research methodologies and bespoke approaches to enhance research outcomes.

  4. Utilize in-depth technical expertise to advise and train users on all research-related technical aspects, including supervising students to optimize their learning experiences.

  5. Oversee laboratory operations, including financial management, resource allocation, grant oversight, purchasing, and financial forecasting.

  6. Create, implement, and regularly update Standard Operating Procedures for users, ensuring adherence to legal requirements, university policies, and best practices.

  7. Enhance the research profile and reputation of the institution by contributing to high-quality publications and presenting at national and international conferences, maximizing the societal and economic impact of research.

  8. Stay informed on advancements in relevant research and technical fields to ensure optimal contributions to research objectives.

  9. Document experimental findings, including data analysis and interpretation, to a publication standard, while maintaining comprehensive databases and records.

  10. Conduct complex data analyses, identifying trends and anomalies, and present findings clearly to the research group, including recommendations for future actions.

  11. Troubleshoot intricate technical issues related to resource design and operation, as well as data generation challenges.

  12. Ensure daily management and compliance with health and safety regulations and other relevant legal requirements.

  13. Maintain accurate records in accordance with established requirements, keeping abreast of legal developments pertinent to the research group, and advising team members as necessary.

  14. Collaborate with others within the broader college and relevant external contacts to support the delivery of research objectives and align with the university's strategic goals.

  15. Participate in outreach and recruitment initiatives for the university.

  16. Perform any other reasonable duties as assigned by the Head of School.

  17. Contribute to enhancing the university's international profile in alignment with its strategic objectives.

Qualifications and Skills

Essential Knowledge:

  1. A degree or equivalent qualification in a relevant field, along with significant experience in a similar role.
  2. Extensive specialist knowledge in Imaging Physics, recognized as an authority in the field.
  3. Understanding of applicable legislative requirements, particularly in health and safety.
  4. A PhD or higher degree in a relevant discipline is preferred.
  5. Familiarity with in-vivo MR experiments is advantageous.
  6. Demonstrated technical skills in Imaging Physics, particularly in MR physics.
  7. Strong IT skills, including proficiency in relevant software.

  2. Strong teamwork and people management skills.
  3. Ability to plan and prioritize technical services to meet long-term strategic goals while delivering daily operations.

  1. Significant analytical and problem-solving skills, with a keen attention to detail.
  2. Relevant work experience in a similar research environment, demonstrating previous outputs and professional growth.
  3. Experience in developing research strategies and managing resources effectively.
  4. Proven track record in managing substantial budgets and monitoring expenditures.
  5. Experience in preparing data analyses and presentations to publication standards.
  6. Ability to work independently to achieve research objectives within set timelines.
