Position Overview

The role is designed to deliver clinical guidance in all facets of Transfusion Science, particularly focusing on patient blood management (PBM). This is a permanent position that represents a collaborative effort between NHS Blood and Transplant (NHSBT) and a leading healthcare institution.

The successful candidate will possess excellent interpersonal skills and demonstrate the ability to collaborate effectively within a multidisciplinary team. A proven history of successful team leadership and a comprehensive understanding of contemporary NHS operations are essential for this role.

Key Responsibilities

NHSBT 5 Programmed Activities including 1 SPA

  • Provide strategic medical leadership for transfusion science across the South East region, fostering strong relationships with healthcare facilities to advocate for best practices. This includes active involvement in the Regional Transfusion Committee's initiatives, with potential contributions to committees beyond the South-East region as needed.
  • Serve as the Regional Consultant for Patient Blood Management and Components within the NHSBT Hospital Liaison Team, collaborating with the Customer Services Manager and Patient Blood Management Practitioner to assist hospitals in the region in delivering safe and effective transfusion practices.
  • Lead and engage in NHSBT clinical research initiatives, encompassing clinical trials, studies, and systematic reviews.
  • Participate in regional and national audit efforts in transfusion science, working alongside the National Comparative Audit Team and regional support.
  • Support the advancement of clinical benchmarking for the implementation of Patient Blood Management.
  • Fulfill additional medical responsibilities within the NHSBT Clinical Directorate as required, in cooperation with fellow consultants. Coverage for personal study, leave, or illness will be arranged through mutual agreement with senior colleagues.
  • Engage in the education and training of both medical and non-medical personnel, contributing to the training programs for Haematology and Transfusion Medicine Specialty Registrars preparing for the FRCPath examinations.
  • Participate in the NHSBT Patient-Facing On Call rota, both during and outside of standard hours, as well as other rotas dictated by job responsibilities.
  • Contribute to the consultant appraisal program, revalidation, and job planning, ensuring duties for both the Trust and NHSBT are covered in collaboration with representatives from both organizations.
  • Engage in and contribute to ongoing professional development (CPD) activities.
  • Participate in internal and external training programs.
  • Undertake additional tasks as requested by the Clinical Director.
  • Ensure that team members under their supervision receive adequate training and are fully informed about health and safety principles and good manufacturing practices (GMP) relevant to their roles, as well as the necessity to meet quality standards as outlined in current guidelines.

Trust Responsibilities

The primary responsibilities will be based at a designated hospital, with the understanding that the appointee may be required to work across various locations within the Trust.

The successful candidate will integrate into the existing clinical and laboratory Blood Transfusion team, collaborating with senior colleagues. They will be expected to lead and/or support the following services:

Blood Transfusion Services and Management of Digital Processes (5 PAs including 1 SPA)

  • Drive the development and implementation of the transfusion decision support module within the Electronic Patient Record, specifically focusing on the utilization of electronically gathered data regarding clinical teams' adherence to established transfusion thresholds to ensure appropriate blood usage and cost efficiency.
  • Enhance blood utilization by clinical teams across the Trust through data feedback on transfusion practices, providing education and specific clinical guidance on appropriate blood use. The primary objective of this role is to spearhead these efforts, engaging with clinical peers to modify practices, minimize unnecessary blood usage, and achieve cost savings for the Trust.
  • Develop discipline-specific guidelines in collaboration with medical and surgical teams to mitigate inappropriate transfusions and explore alternative methods for managing patients without blood transfusion, including cell salvage and anemia management.
  • Support the utilization and further enhancement of the electronic transfusion process, ensuring the monitoring of safe transfusion practices and cross-Trust training for staff.
