LOCUM CONSULTANT IN HAEMATOLOGY

We are seeking applications for the position of Locum Consultant in Haematology, primarily focusing on laboratory haematology.

This role offers a unique opportunity to join a dedicated team at the forefront of haematology diagnostics, contributing to the enhancement of our laboratory services and providing expert consultative support.

Key Responsibilities

Clinical Service Delivery: Laboratory

The successful candidate will serve as the duty consultant in the haematology laboratory for one day each week, overseeing routine blood film analysis and bone marrow morphology. Responsibilities include:

  • Supervising registrars in morphology assessments.
  • Responding to inquiries from general practitioners via email.
  • Collaborating with other laboratory consultants to report and authorize blood films and bone marrow aspirates.

Additionally, the post-holder will play a vital role in the training of registrars in laboratory haematology and provide essential support for training doctors on a rotational basis.

Collaboration with transfusion consultants and clinical teams is essential to ensure optimal transfusion practices across the organization.

Clinical Service Delivery: Non-Laboratory

The post-holder will also support multidisciplinary teams in the management of in-patients.

Job Responsibilities

This locum position is available for a duration of up to 12 months. An indicative timetable and job plan will be provided, with the final plan agreed upon with the clinical director or laboratory lead upon appointment. The Trust anticipates that consultants will allocate approximately 80% of their time to clinical duties, with the remainder dedicated to teaching, training, and administrative responsibilities.

Qualifications and Experience

Essential Qualifications

  • Membership or Fellowship of the Royal College of Physicians.
  • Membership or Fellowship of the Royal College of Pathologists or equivalent experience.
  • Full and Specialist registration with the General Medical Council (GMC) or eligibility for registration.
  • For UK-trained applicants, possession of a Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) or nearing completion.
  • Non-UK trained applicants must demonstrate equivalence to the UK CCT.

Desirable Qualifications

  • Higher medical degree.

Essential Experience

  • Specialist experience in haematology.
  • Experience in service development and delivery.

Desirable Experience

  • Consultant-level management experience.
