Position Overview

The University of Leicester Ulverscroft Eye Unit (UEU) is pleased to present an opportunity for a Postdoctoral Research Scientist (PDRA) role aimed at investigating the potential of retinal image-derived phenotypes in disease prediction and modeling.

Research Focus

This position will involve conducting genome-wide and phenome-wide association studies, as well as employing deep learning techniques on imaging datasets. Candidates may also have the chance to participate in laboratory experiments, including CRISPR-Cas9 mutagenesis and retinal disease modeling, depending on their interests.

Responsibilities

The PDRA will take charge of developing and executing an independent original research program aligned with the strategic goals of the group. Responsibilities include:

  • Managing extensive genotype and phenotype datasets.
  • Supervising clinical studies.
  • Supporting research staff and PhD/iMSc/project students.
Research Environment

The UEU is a clinical research unit recognized for excellence in ophthalmic research. Our facilities include cutting-edge research environments at the University Hospitals of Leicester and the Robert Kilpatrick Clinical Sciences Building, along with a purpose-built animal research facility.

The team consists of six full-time staff members with diverse expertise in clinical ophthalmology, genetics, imaging, engineering, electrophysiology, programming, eye tracking, and visual behavior.

We benefit from a world-class data science infrastructure and a £2M High Performance Computing facility, which includes dedicated research computing support and secure IT systems.

Support and Development

The core team is supported by additional teams at the University Hospitals of Leicester, including facilities funded by the NIHR. Our unit has a strong history of fostering early-career researchers, many of whom have successfully secured competitive external fellowships.

Candidate Profile

We are looking for a candidate with a robust background in bioinformatics, computational biology, or a related discipline. The ideal applicant will possess:

  • Creativity and ambition.
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • A strong interest in addressing complex challenges.

Essential qualifications include experience in genetic data analysis and statistical genetics methodologies, such as GWAS and PheWAS. Proficiency in statistical programming languages (e.g., R, Python) and a solid understanding of genetic and molecular biology concepts are required. Familiarity with CRISPR-Cas9 technology and knowledge of artificial intelligence and machine learning techniques applied to biological datasets would be advantageous.
