London, Greater London, United Kingdom North Middlesex University Hospital NHS Trust Full time

Position Overview

We are seeking to recruit a Senior Critical Care Consultant to become a vital member of our esteemed team at North Middlesex University Hospital NHS Trust. This role offers the opportunity to work in a state-of-the-art facility equipped with advanced operating theatres and cutting-edge anaesthetic delivery and monitoring systems.

Candidates must possess full GMC Registration and should either be listed on the Specialist Register or be within 6 months of achieving their CCT at the time of the interview.

Key Responsibilities

The successful candidate will collaborate with fellow professionals and the Clinical Audit and Effectiveness team to ensure the execution of pertinent clinical audits.

As a consultant, you will maintain ongoing responsibility for the care of your patients and the effective operation of your department. Administrative duties related to patient care and departmental management are also expected.

The appointee will be responsible for upholding their continuing medical education in accordance with the standards established by the relevant Royal College.

Additional Duties

The appointee is anticipated to actively engage in the advancement of clinical governance within both departments. The GMC's Good Medical Practice guidelines will serve as the foundation for the responsibilities and standards expected of our consultants.

Newly appointed consultants will receive an Induction Programme and mandatory training, all of which are compulsory. An established annual appraisal process is in place for all consultants and non-consultant career grades within the Trust.

It is a condition of employment that all staff members uphold responsibilities for Infection Control. The appointee will be required to attend mandatory Infection Control training upon appointment and to actively participate in initiatives aimed at reducing Health Care Associated Infections (HCAIs).

The appointee will also be expected to meet the Continuing Medical Education (CME) or Continuing Professional Development (CPD) requirements set forth by the relevant Royal College.

About North Middlesex University Hospital NHS Trust

North Mid is an integral part of the North Central London integrated care system, which encompasses NHS and local authority organizations. We are committed to working collaboratively with our partners, with many of our financial and performance objectives assessed at the system level. While each organization remains a standalone statutory body, we have an infrastructure in place for shared decision-making and collaborative approaches.

We take pride in our staff and strive to ensure that their training equips them to deliver exceptional clinical care. Our institution also serves as a training hub for medical students from various universities, as well as nursing and midwifery students.

Critical Care Department Overview

The Critical Care Department encompasses both an Intensive Care Unit (ICU) and a High Dependency Unit (HDU). The ICU features 8 individual rooms with single beds and 2 larger rooms accommodating 2 beds each, all designed as negative pressure rooms. The HDU consists of 9 beds, including 3 single rooms and two larger areas with 3 beds each. Each bed in the Critical Care Complex is outfitted with comprehensive monitoring capabilities and a central monitoring station. The unit admits nearly 1000 patients annually, with a median length of stay that reflects a high turnover rate, resulting in a consistently busy environment. Over 90% of referrals originate from medical specialties.

Regular multidisciplinary meetings, including a weekly radiology meeting and daily microbiology discussions, are integral to our operations. The department conducts two consultant-led ward rounds daily, supplemented by a night telephone ward round, ensuring thorough patient oversight. Additionally, critical care services are available 24/7, led by a dedicated outreach nurse, and a follow-up clinic is held bi-monthly for selected patients, with plans to increase its frequency.
