Role Overview
As a key player in our logistics operations, you will collaborate with depot, regional, and central teams to ensure the effective management and compliance of our transport fleet. Your primary responsibility will be to align fleet planning with business needs while overseeing the performance of our engineering supplier base to maintain cost efficiency and meet key performance indicators (KPIs).

Key Responsibilities
  • Ensure adherence to all legal obligations and policies related to fleet and driver operations, including maintaining compliance with Operators Licences.
  • Manage relationships with the Logistics UK Association to position Sainsbury's as a leader in the industry, ensuring compliance with EU regulations and the Working Time Directive.
  • Strategically plan fleet allocations in accordance with depot budgets to support peak operational demands.
  • Oversee the maintenance of the company operator's licence and evaluate third-party operator licences to mitigate risks in logistics operations.
  • Enhance performance by coaching depot transport and fleet teams, ensuring compliance with company policies and legal standards.
  • Drive excellence in service and cost management across engineering fleet operations, ensuring KPIs are consistently met.
  • Develop and implement a standardized compliance reporting process for all engineering compliance areas.
  • Prepare and manage the annual revenue budget for the vehicle fleet, including fleet replacement orders.
  • Identify and deploy a national standard for tachograph analysis and Road Transport Directive compliance across all logistics depots.
  • Utilize industry benchmarking to elevate current performance standards.
  • Collaborate with Transport Compliance leads and Regional Transport Managers to identify and standardize best practices across the organization.
  • Build and maintain relationships with key personnel across Sainsbury's depots, regional teams, and suppliers.
  • Act as the primary contact for Group Insurance coordination related to fleet operations.
  • Continuously seek to innovate and enhance processes for the management of HGV and MHE assets to ensure compliance and cost reduction.
  • Manage and uphold Earned Recognition and Truck Excellence standards.
  • Facilitate effective communication and engagement processes among colleagues.
  • Foster a positive health and safety culture on-site, promoting safe working practices.
  • Work with group insurance to minimize accident-related costs.
  • Oversee a significant budget for seasonal fleet hire.
Qualifications and Skills
  • In-depth knowledge of Road Transport Legislation.
  • Possession of a Certificate of Professional Competence in Road Haulage.
  • Strong problem-solving skills with the ability to generate accurate reports.
  • Experience managing costs within budgetary constraints.
  • Proven track record in a central team management role.
  • Familiarity with compliance and asset management systems, including databases and compliance tracking tools.
  • Ability to develop database solutions for asset management tracking.
  • Effective communication and influencing skills across various teams.
  • Strong negotiation skills with the ability to drive outcomes.
  • Proficient in identifying and implementing solutions to challenges within established processes.
  • Adaptable in approach to achieve results and gain commitment from diverse stakeholders.
Decision-Making Authority
  • Authorized to sign legal documents related to operators licensing and DVLA compliance.
  • Accountable for compliance contracts and transport asset procurement.
  • Responsible for disciplinary actions and grievance handling per site agreements.
  • Oversee the acquisition of driver's hours management systems.
  • Revenue sign-off authority up to a specified limit.
