Position Overview

We are looking for a Senior Psychiatric Consultant to become a vital member of the Eastern Assessment and Treatment Service (ATS). You will be part of a collaborative, supportive, and dedicated team that is passionate about delivering high-quality mental health care.

The community services in our region are organized into two primary teams, each further divided into smaller clusters. Each cluster is aligned with specific GP practices, facilitating effective collaboration with our Primary Care partners. This role will be situated within the designated cluster.

As a teaching organization, we maintain strong affiliations with medical education institutions. Each cluster is supported by trainees, including Foundation Year 2, GP trainees, and both core and higher specialty trainees. We also engage in training for medical students and Physician Associate students.

Main Responsibilities

As a Senior Psychiatric Consultant, you will be an integral part of a large, multidisciplinary community mental health team, responsible for delivering specialized assessments and treatments to individuals with complex mental health and social needs.

Your key responsibilities will include:

  • Conducting specialized medical and psychiatric evaluations and providing evidence-based treatment to patients referred to our service.
  • Offering clinical supervision to junior staff and providing informal guidance to non-medical team members.
  • Assuming the role of Responsible Clinician for patients under Community Treatment Orders, including participation in hearings and tribunals.
  • Conducting Mental Health Act assessments for patients on the team’s caseload.
  • Collaborating with inpatient Responsible Clinicians.
  • Engaging with forensic teams, substance misuse services, and risk management panels as necessary.

Qualifications

Essential:

  • MB BS or equivalent medical qualification.

Desirable:

  • Higher degree or qualification in medical education, clinical research, or management.
  • MRCPsych.

Eligibility Criteria

Essential:

  • Full registration with the GMC and a license to practice at the time of appointment.
  • Inclusion on the GMC Specialist Register or eligibility within six months.
  • Approved clinician status or ability to obtain within three months of appointment.
  • Approval under S12 or ability to achieve within three months of appointment.

Desirable:

  • Good standing with the GMC regarding any warnings or conditions on practice.

Clinical Skills & Knowledge

Essential:

  • Extensive knowledge in the specialty.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills in English.

Desirable:

  • A diverse range of specialist and sub-specialist experience relevant to the role within the NHS or a comparable service.
