Position Overview

The Norfolk and Norwich University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (NNUH) is a prominent teaching hospital with a capacity of 1200 beds, delivering acute medical services to approximately one million residents in Norfolk and its neighboring regions.

The Respiratory Department is staffed by a dedicated team of 13 full-time consultants, an academic professor, and a nurse consultant. Our department specializes in various areas including sleep medicine, ventilation, bronchiectasis, cystic fibrosis, lung cancer/pleural medicine, interstitial lung disease, and challenging asthma cases. We maintain robust partnerships with the University of East Anglia's Norwich Medical School and School of Health Sciences, alongside strong collaborative ties with primary care and research initiatives.

Key Responsibilities

An exciting opportunity exists for a junior band five Clinical Physiologist within our Respiratory department. We seek a motivated and enthusiastic individual to become part of our supportive and professional team. The service encompasses a wide array of physiological assessments, including routine lung function evaluations, cardiopulmonary exercise assessments, bronchoprovocation tests, bronchodilator studies, and respiratory muscle strength evaluations.

The ideal candidate will possess a BSc(Hons) in Sport and Exercise Science or a related field, along with relevant work experience and a keen interest in respiratory physiology. Training will be provided to enable the successful applicant to work autonomously and uphold high professional standards while delivering specialized clinical technical services for both straightforward and intricate lung function investigations.

Compensation and Development

Starting salary is set at £24, at 70% pa (Annex 21). The successful candidate will be required to complete the Graduate Diploma in Respiratory Science within a year, with academic training facilitated by Sheffield Hallam University. Upon successful completion of the diploma and obtaining ARTP professional qualification, the candidate will advance to the Band 5 Clinical Physiologist role.

Job Responsibilities

  • Conduct both simple and complex lung function assessments, ensuring the production of technically satisfactory measurements that contribute to clinical decision-making for patient management.
  • Safeguard the health and safety of staff and patients by adhering to trust health and safety and infection control protocols.
  • Calibrate equipment and maintain ongoing quality control of measurements, including personal biological control procedures.
  • Ensure the safe operation of expensive and complex equipment.
  • Guide, instruct, and coach patients in complex techniques, emphasizing the importance of full cooperation and maximum effort during lung function assessments.
  • Perform comprehensive lung function tests throughout the day, requiring sustained concentration and the ability to manage interruptions and inquiries from the public and patients while maintaining professionalism.
