Position Overview

We are seeking a full-time Consultant in Infection, specializing in Microbiology, to join our dynamic Infection Service within the Department of Pathology at Lancashire Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. The ideal candidate will possess a Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) in microbiology or a combined CCT in infectious diseases and microbiology, or equivalent qualifications.

The Consultants are responsible for providing a 24-hour advisory service to healthcare professionals and other stakeholders. This role is both demanding and fast-paced, requiring effective communication and clinical skills to manage numerous requests for guidance, conduct ward rounds, participate in multi-disciplinary team (MDT) meetings, and engage in clinical liaison.

Key Responsibilities

The Consultant will be involved in various clinical activities, including:

  • Delivering a comprehensive Tuberculosis (TB) service in collaboration with the Respiratory Division.
  • Participating in an on-call rota, providing out-of-hours support, including weekends and public holidays.
  • Addressing any OPAT-related inquiries during on-call periods.
  • Engaging directly with patients and coordinating care within the Preston and Chorley Hospitals.
  • Contributing to the management of patients enrolled in the OPAT service.
  • Instructing and mentoring medical students as part of their undergraduate education.
  • Supervising Higher Specialist Scientific Training.
  • Participating in the Infection Service Consultant on-call rota, with additional responsibilities during colleagues' absences.
  • Ensuring continuous patient care commitment, even in part-time roles, and making appropriate arrangements for leave.
  • Upholding high professional standards in clinical care and engaging in ongoing professional development.
  • Establishing connections with local General Practitioners.

About Our Department

The Microbiology Laboratory at Royal Preston Hospital, established in 1989, is an accredited facility that plays a crucial role in our pathology services. Our laboratory is equipped with advanced technology, including the BactAlert Blood Culture System, Vitek 2 for organism identification, and a range of molecular testing platforms.

The department is dedicated to training Biomedical Scientist (BMS) staff and is recognized for the training of medically qualified Microbiologists. Specialist Trainees gain practical experience while being supervised by a designated consultant, ensuring compliance with the European Working Time Directive.

Qualifications and Skills

Essential Qualifications

  • Primary Medical Qualification.
  • FRCPath or equivalent.
  • Full and specialist registration with the GMC.
  • CCT in microbiology or equivalent for non-UK trained applicants.

Desirable Qualifications

  • MRCP (UK) or equivalent.
  • Additional relevant higher degrees.

Experience and Skills

  • Proven clinical experience in Infection management and laboratory liaison.
  • Evidence of clinical leadership and commitment to service development.
  • Interest in research and personal development through publications.
  • Effective communication and organizational skills.
  • Ability to work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team.
