Infection Consultant Specialist

Position Overview
This role is for a full-time Consultant specializing in Infection, requiring a Consultant with Specialist training in Microbiology and a Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) in microbiology or Combined Infection Training, or a joint CCT in infectious diseases and microbiology, or an equivalent qualification. The position is within a progressive Infection Service located in the Department of Pathology at Lancashire Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.
The Consultants provide a comprehensive 24-hour advisory service to healthcare professionals and other stakeholders. Given the Trust's extensive operations, this position is both busy and demanding, necessitating responses to numerous requests for guidance, participation in ward rounds, multi-disciplinary team (MDT) meetings, and clinical liaison through both in-person and telephonic communication.
Engagement in joint ward rounds with the Antimicrobial Pharmacist and rounds in other specialized units such as critical care, Neurosurgery, Orthopaedics, Surgery, and Nephrology will be coordinated among the consultants based on individual interests and may rotate with mutual consent. Currently, some ward rounds and MDTs are conducted via virtual platforms.
Key Responsibilities
The role includes involvement in the Tuberculosis (TB) service, with ongoing discussions with the Respiratory Division regarding the integration of Microbiology in TB service delivery.
This clinical advisory role entails a 1 in 6 on-call rota for out-of-hours coverage, including weekends and public holidays.
The Consultant will:
- Provide direct patient care, contribute to multidisciplinary teams in Renal and Paediatrics, and oversee the coordination of patient care within the hospitals.
- Participate in the management of patients enrolled in the Outpatient Parenteral Antimicrobial Therapy (OPAT) service.
- Engage in the education of medical students at the undergraduate level.
- Supervise Higher Specialist Scientific Training.
- Partake in the Infection Service Consultant on-call rota, providing additional coverage during colleagues' absences.
- Maintain a continuous commitment to patient care, ensuring adequate arrangements for leave and off-duty periods.
- Uphold high professional standards in clinical care, both through direct patient interaction and ongoing professional development.
- Establish and nurture relationships with local General Practitioners.
About the Organization
The Microbiology Laboratory at Royal Preston Hospital, established in 1989, is part of the Department of Pathology and is accredited for its clinical work by the United Kingdom Accreditation Service (excluding Andrology).
Our laboratory is equipped with advanced technology, including the BactAlert Blood Culture System, Vitek 2 for organism identification and antibiotic sensitivity testing, and Maldi-Tof mass spectrometry for organism identification, along with UF5000i urine analyzers.
In the virology sector, we conduct a variety of molecular tests using three Roche cobas 4800 automated extraction platforms, the Hologic Panther, and Cepheid GeneXpert. Automated serological analysis is performed with the Roche Cobas e601 analyzer for high-volume screening, supplemented by Diasorin Liaison XL for additional investigations.
The Department is recognized for training Biomedical Scientist (BMS) staff and is approved for the training of medically qualified Microbiologists.
Specialist Trainees with appropriate experience participate in the rota at a level compliant with the European Working Time Directive, always under the supervision of a designated consultant. This occasionally means that the consultant will be second on-call, supporting the Specialist Trainee who is first on-call.
