Infection Consultant Specialist

Preston, Lancashire, United Kingdom Lancashire Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust Full time

Position Overview

This role is for a full-time Infection Consultant, specifically for a professional with specialist training in Microbiology and a Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) in microbiology or Combined Infection Training, or equivalent qualifications. The position is within a dynamic Infection Service located in the Department of Pathology.

The Infection Consultants provide a 24-hour advisory service to healthcare professionals and other service users. Given the scale and complexity of the Trust, this position is both busy and demanding, requiring prompt responses to numerous requests for guidance, participation in ward rounds, multi-disciplinary team (MDT) meetings, and clinical consultations, both in-person and via telephone.

Collaboration in joint ward rounds with the Antimicrobial Pharmacist and participation in rounds across various specialized units such as critical care, Neurosurgery, Orthopaedics, Surgery, and Nephrology will be arranged based on personal interests and mutual agreement among consultants. Currently, some ward rounds and MDTs are conducted through virtual platforms.

Main Responsibilities

Involvement in the Tuberculosis (TB) service is an option, with ongoing discussions with the Respiratory Division regarding the integration of Microbiology in TB service delivery.

This clinical advisory role includes a 1 in 6 rota for out-of-hours coverage, which encompasses weekends and public holidays.

The incumbent will also address any Outpatient Parenteral Antimicrobial Therapy (OPAT) related inquiries during on-call hours.

The responsibilities include:

  • Direct patient care and coordination of care for patients within the healthcare facilities.
  • Management of patients enrolled in the OPAT service.
  • Participation in the education of medical students.
  • Oversight of Higher Specialist Scientific Training.
  • Engagement in the Infection Service Consultant on-call rota, providing additional support during colleagues' absences.
  • Commitment to patient care continuity, ensuring proper arrangements for leave and off-duty periods.
  • Promotion of high professional standards in clinical care and ongoing professional development.
  • Establishment of connections with local General Practitioners.

About the Organization

The Microbiology Laboratory at the facility was established in 1989 and is part of the Department of Pathology. It holds accreditation for its clinical operations.

Available equipment includes advanced systems for blood culture, organism identification, and antibiotic sensitivity testing, as well as molecular testing platforms for virology.

The Department is recognized for training Biomedical Scientist staff and is authorized to train medically qualified Microbiologists.

Specialist Trainees with appropriate experience participate in the rota under supervision, ensuring compliance with the European Working Time Directive.
