About the Role

We are seeking a highly skilled and dedicated individual to join our Clinical Genetics team at Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children NHS Foundation Trust. As a Genomic Associate, you will play a vital role in supporting the work of our clinical genetics team, including requesting family information and results to aid in the counselling of patients and their families.

Key Responsibilities
  • Support the work of the clinical genetics team, including requesting family information and results to aid in the counselling of patients and their families.
  • Support the Whole Genome Sequencing (WGS) pathway for patients, including liaising with external laboratories to obtain samples and sending them for testing, and maintaining a tracking system for these samples.
  • Prepare clinical data prior to a patient attending clinic, requiring prolonged periods of concentration several times a day.
  • Gather information from families in a sensitive and caring manner, often at difficult times for people.
  • Act as a support system for genetic counsellors/consultants in the WGS patient pathway from patient registration to obtaining informed consent from families.
  • Provide guidance and support for referring clinicians requesting whole genome sequencing.
  • Ensure equity of access to information and risk assessment by identifying extra support for patients who may require additional support, such as interpreters or involvement of learning disability nurse specialists.
  • Answer the telephone and respond to written correspondence.

Requirements
  • Level 4 apprenticeship in healthcare science (or equivalent).
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Excellent attention to detail.
  • Excellent telephone manner.
  • Excellent time management and organisational skills.
  • Ability to work autonomously and make decisions with confidence.
  • Ability to prioritise own workload and work to strict guidelines.
  • Ability to deal with patients in a sensitive and empathetic manner.
  • Good awareness of own limitations and when to escalate issues.
  • Ability to work within a multi-disciplinary team.
  • Ability to generate routine correspondence.
  • Ability to use MS Word, Excel, and PowerPoint, as well as local patient information systems.
