Bristol, Bristol, United Kingdom Ministry of Defence Full time

Position Overview

Are you interested in contributing to critical Defence initiatives and playing a significant role in the national security of the United Kingdom?

The Defence Nuclear Organisation (DNO), established in 2016, is dedicated to delivering nuclear capabilities that deter threats and safeguard our nation.

The DNO manages all defence nuclear operations (excluding direct operations) and is tasked with ensuring nuclear deterrence; sponsoring the Defence Nuclear Enterprise, which encompasses all organisations, programmes, and personnel that support the UK's nuclear deterrent; and providing guidance on UK nuclear policy, planning, and international collaboration on nuclear issues.

For over six decades, the UK's independent nuclear deterrent has served to counter the most severe threats to our national security and that of our NATO partners. To maintain a credible and effective nuclear deterrent as long as necessary, we are constructing four new nuclear-armed submarines, known as the Dreadnought Class, and modernising our nuclear warheads. These renewal initiatives will leverage cutting-edge technology and showcase the capabilities of British industry in science and engineering.

At DNO, we firmly believe that fostering diversity and inclusion is not only a moral imperative but also vital for a successful and dynamic organisation. We recognise that diverse teams offer a broad spectrum of perspectives, experiences, and ideas, leading to enhanced decision-making, creativity, and innovation. Our culture celebrates differences, ensuring our workforce feels supported, included, and empowered. Join us to be part of an organisation that genuinely values diversity and inclusion and strives to make a positive impact globally.

The incumbent will serve as the designated leader for safety and environmental management activities within the DNO Transport programme. Reporting to the Transport Delivery Duty Holder (DDH), the incumbent will collaborate closely with the existing Nuclear Safety Manager to ensure that conventional health and safety principles underpin Defence Nuclear Transport Nuclear Safety.

This role can be based in multiple locations with regular travel required.

Role Responsibilities

The ideal candidate will possess a robust technical background and experience in managing safety within a complex, high-hazard environment.

The successful applicant will need to be self-driven and proactive in developing this role within a challenging and engaging programme. Strong organisational and communication skills are essential for success in this position, as well as the ability to manage relationships with stakeholders and suppliers.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Ensuring compliance with MOD policies, regulations, and procedures related to DNO Transport system safety.
  • Overseeing activities to demonstrate that risks are minimised to ALARP (As Low As Reasonably Practicable).
  • Managing and maintaining a comprehensive suite of safety cases for vehicles and equipment used in Transport Operations.
  • Coordinating safety management activities across nuclear safety management interfaces and with Transport stakeholders.
  • Ensuring adherence to MoD and Warhead Group Safety Management Systems throughout the lifecycle, including monitoring arrangements and necessary documentation.
  • Facilitating Nuclear Transport Operations Group (NTOG) safety and environmental committees, panels, and working groups.
  • Providing support to DNO Transport Programme and commercial activities through qualified advice on safety and environmental requirements.

Hybrid and flexible working arrangements may be considered for this position, but regular attendance at the workplace will be necessary due to security requirements. Candidates are encouraged to discuss their preferences with the recruiting line manager prior to applying.

Qualifications and Skills

Essential:

  • Professionally recognised qualification in environmental management or relevant experience.

Desirable:

  • STEM qualification at Level 6.
  • System Safety Practitioner (for internal MOD applicants) and/or PGCert in System Safety Engineering.

Behaviours

During the selection process, candidates will be assessed against the following behaviours:

  • Making Effective Decisions
  • Communicating and Influencing
  • Delivering at Pace

Benefits

In addition to a competitive salary, the Ministry of Defence contributes significantly towards your membership in the Civil Service Defined Benefit Pension scheme.

We are committed to providing a unique employee experience and ensuring that every employee feels valued and fairly compensated. Our benefits include:

  • Tailored learning and development opportunities to support your career growth.
  • Flexible working options to promote work-life balance.

  • 25 days of annual leave, increasing to 30 days after five years of service, plus 8 public holidays, along with family-friendly benefits.
  • Access to a Cycle Loan scheme.
  • Participation in the Defence Sports & Recreational Association (DSRA).
  • Discounts through the Defence Discount Service.
  • Access to on-site amenities at various locations.

Please note that the position does not offer relocation expenses.

New external recruits to the MOD will undergo a six-month probation period.

Travel expenses for interviews will not be reimbursed.

The Ministry of Defence is dedicated to providing a safe and healthy work environment, including initiatives to promote a smoke-free workplace.
