Position Overview

An exceptional opportunity is available for a Recovery College Lead to join the Mental Health & Learning Disabilities Care Group within the Business Improvement, Strategy, and Transformation Team.

The Recovery College Lead will oversee a project aimed at establishing a tailored Recovery College framework in the Cwm Taf Morgannwg region.

Understanding Recovery Colleges

A Recovery College offers complimentary educational sessions covering various topics related to mental health, physical health, and overall wellbeing, accessible to all individuals, including staff, those with lived experiences, caregivers, and the general public. These courses are collaboratively designed and delivered, demonstrating the potential of Recovery Colleges to enhance the experiences of individuals utilizing mental health services, as well as the staff providing support, ultimately fostering a culture of compassionate care within organizations.

The ideal candidate will possess personal experience with mental health challenges and have a background as a Peer Worker.

Applicants with experience equivalent to a Master’s degree are encouraged to apply and will be considered.

Key Responsibilities

The selected individual will leverage their lived experience, knowledge, skills, and expertise to spearhead the Recovery College Program within the Health Board. This encompasses the creation of a business case for the Recovery College and supervising its execution. Additionally, they will establish and nurture the peer support/lived experience workforce.

Responsibilities include:

  • Managing partnerships and leading a team.
  • Overseeing essential tasks related to advancing the lived experience agenda.

The successful candidate will be employed by Cwm Taf Morgannwg Health Board and will collaborate closely with the Health Education Improvement Wales Lived Experience team. This role will involve participation in the national Recovery College Community of Practice and ensuring alignment with the national Recovery College development framework.

This position is fixed-term due to funding.

Welsh language proficiency is desirable; applications from both Welsh and English speakers are welcomed.

Job Responsibilities

Planning and Development

Outline local roles, responsibilities, and processes involved in Recovery College initiatives, focusing on the development, planning, delivery, and evaluation of a high-quality, accessible, and responsive peer-led Recovery College.

Monitoring and Improvement

Gather and analyze a variety of qualitative and quantitative metrics, providing regular updates to promote visibility and awareness at the Board level.

Communication

Serve as the primary contact for Recovery College activities at the organizational level, collaborating with leaders, line managers, and staff to promote best practices, resources, and standards while ensuring effective communication of complex information.

Financial Management

Manage a delegated budget, including oversight of financial resources for the specialized service.

Leadership and Training

Design educational programs, expand peer-led services, and supervise initiatives. Demonstrate knowledge of health service management, including change management and service redesign. Provide training on specializations to peers, clinicians, management, and staff at all levels.

Qualifications and Knowledge

Essential

  • Master’s degree or equivalent lived and professional experience.
  • Evidence of recent professional development in recovery-focused and peer support training.
  • Commitment to ongoing professional development.
  • Knowledge of current health and social care policies.

Desirable

  • Project management qualification.
  • Professional registration with Health & Care Professionals Council (HCPC) and Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC).

Experience

Essential

  • Personal experience with mental health challenges and utilizing mental health services.
  • Experience in change management.
  • Experience supervising and appraising staff.
  • Experience managing complex HR issues, including performance management and long-term sickness.

Skills and Attributes

Essential

  • Ability to work autonomously with strong self-management skills.
  • Effective planning and prioritization of workload.
  • Ability to communicate complex information to diverse audiences.
  • Clear understanding of personal recovery and peer support/training roles.
  • Experience in strategy development and implementation.
  • Post-qualification experience in mental health services (statutory or voluntary sector).
