London, Greater London, United Kingdom Dogs Trust Full time

Are you a seasoned professional in advocacy and public policy with a love for canines?
We are seeking an Advocacy and Policy Engagement Specialist to assist in our vital mission to ensure that decision-makers prioritize canine welfare in their policies.

Role Overview
In the capacity of Advocacy and Policy Engagement Specialist, your responsibilities will include:

  • aiding in the execution of our comprehensive advocacy strategy across governmental bodies and the European Union,
  • supporting and occasionally spearheading the planning and coordination of political gatherings, discussions, and project tours, as part of our outreach to policymakers,
  • assisting in the oversight of the Pet Advertising Advisory Group (PAAG) and the EU Dog and Cat Alliance,
  • fostering and sustaining constructive relationships with key external partners, including legislators and civil service officials.

Candidate Profile
To excel in this position, you should possess a background in parliamentary or public affairs, along with a solid grasp of the political environment in the UK. Exceptional communication abilities are essential, enabling you to actively listen, negotiate, and influence decision-makers through proficient written English, allowing for the creation of clear and concise professional correspondence and communications. A genuine interest in and commitment to the objectives and values of Dogs Trust is crucial.

About Dogs Trust
Our passion is dogs. We strive to ensure that every canine companion receives the love and care they deserve. We are committed to never euthanizing a healthy dog, focusing our efforts on assisting dogs in need, supporting their owners, and fostering a better future for dogs. Since our inception in 1891, we have grown to become the UK's foremost dog charity, helping thousands of loyal companions find their forever homes each year.

Please be aware that Dogs Trust operates as an independent entity, free from any political affiliations. This independence is vital, as it empowers us to advocate for dog welfare issues on behalf of dogs and their owners across the UK. For our advocacy roles, the ability to maintain political neutrality in public settings or while engaging with Members of Parliament is essential.

Team Dynamics
The Advocacy Team collaborates across various governmental levels and the EU to ensure that the health and welfare of dogs are consistently considered by policymakers. In addition to our direct political engagement, Dogs Trust chairs the Pet Advertising Advisory Group (PAAG), which addresses concerns regarding the irresponsible marketing of pets for sale, rehoming, and exchange. We also provide secretariat support for the EU Dog & Cat Alliance, engaging with EU policymakers to advocate for improved conditions for dogs and cats across Europe.
