Position Overview: We are seeking a dedicated and experienced Principal Lawyer to lead our dynamic Legal team at the London Borough of Lewisham. This role is pivotal in ensuring the delivery of high-quality legal services to our diverse community.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Manage the Place team, encompassing areas such as Planning, Property, Environmental, Contracts, Education, and Employment law.
  • Provide expert legal advice and oversee service delivery, maintaining the highest standards of professional and client care.
  • Act as a deputy for the Head of Legal Services, ensuring smooth operations within the department.
  • Allocate tasks to team members, ensuring effective training and development, alongside conducting regular performance evaluations.
  • Advise senior officials, including the Mayor and Cabinet, on legal matters and implications.
  • Contribute to strategic decision-making and the development of future legal services initiatives.
  • Oversee major projects on behalf of Legal Services, aligning with strategic objectives.
  • Lead a team of approximately 12-14 professionals, facilitating training sessions and workshops.
  • Engage with clients to enhance service delivery and performance standards.
  • Review and refine reports prepared by staff in other departments, ensuring legal robustness.
  • Stay updated on current legal requirements and inform colleagues as necessary.
  • Implement new procedures in line with ISO9001 standards and adapt to legislative changes.

Qualifications:

  • A current practicing certificate as a Barrister, Solicitor, or Legal Executive.
  • Extensive experience in one or more of the following legal areas: Planning, Environmental Law, or Commercial Law.
  • Prior experience in a local government environment is highly desirable.
