Position Overview: The London Borough of Lewisham is seeking a dedicated and experienced Principal Lawyer to lead our dynamic Legal team. This role is pivotal in ensuring that our vibrant and culturally diverse community receives the highest standard of legal support.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Manage the Place team, encompassing areas such as Planning, Property, Environmental, Contracts, Education, and Employment law.
  • Provide expert legal advice and oversee service delivery, maintaining the highest professional standards.
  • Act as deputy to the Head of Legal Services, ensuring seamless operations within the department.
  • Allocate tasks effectively among team members, facilitating their training and professional development.
  • Advise key stakeholders including the Mayor, Cabinet, and senior officers on legal matters.
  • Contribute to strategic decisions affecting Legal Services and assist in the development of future strategies.
  • Project manage significant initiatives on behalf of Legal Services, aligning with our strategic objectives.
  • Lead a team of approximately 12-14 legal professionals, providing guidance and training opportunities.
  • Engage with clients to enhance service delivery and performance standards.
  • Review and critique reports from other departments, ensuring legal robustness and accuracy.
  • Stay updated on current legal standards and practices, providing necessary guidance to colleagues.
  • Implement new procedures in accordance with ISO9001 and adapt to changes in legislation or Council policy.

Qualifications:

  • A current practicing certificate as a Barrister, Solicitor, or Legal Executive.
  • Extensive experience in at least one of the following legal areas: Planning, Environmental Law, or Commercial Law.
  • Prior experience in a local government environment is preferred.
