Position Overview

The successful candidate will take charge of the Cardiac Catheterization Unit, demonstrating exemplary communication abilities, enthusiasm, and organizational skills while maintaining flexibility in their approach.

In this essential position, you will embody and promote our organizational vision and values, supervising the team, managing schedules, addressing incident reports, and ensuring compliance with safety standards as per Trust policies and guidelines.

There may be opportunities to work across multiple sites in the future.

Key Responsibilities

The individual in this role will hold ongoing accountability for the assessment and provision of care for patients admitted to the Cardiac Catheterization Unit. Responsibilities include overseeing staff performance, planning, and executing the department's comprehensive policies, procedures, and services. You will ensure the department operates smoothly and efficiently while adhering to budgetary constraints for both invasive and non-invasive cardiology procedures.

Key duties include:

  • Supervising, managing, and educating nursing personnel, evaluating their proficiency with medical equipment in the catheterization lab, ensuring they achieve competency prior to device usage.
  • Acting as a clinical role model within the cardiology domain and leading the team to guarantee the delivery of high-quality care.
  • Fostering and nurturing clinical leadership across all levels.
  • Ensuring the provision and monitoring of superior nursing care standards for all patients in the department, in line with evidence-based professional practices and Trust policies.
  • Managing resources within the area, including budget oversight.

Job Responsibilities

  • Oversee and manage the daily operations of the catheterization lab, providing leadership and ensuring adherence to standard operating procedures.
  • Lead a team to deliver exceptional care to cardiac patients throughout their treatment journey, responsible for the organization, delivery, and assessment of nursing care within the department.
  • Play a crucial role in establishing, maintaining, and supporting cardiology services, which encompass diagnostic and interventional procedures, as well as a day care ward.
  • Collaborate with colleagues within the Cardiology Directorate to foster a patient-centered culture that enhances care delivery.
  • Guide the professional development of the multidisciplinary catheterization lab team.
  • Work in partnership with medical leads for the catheterization lab and cardiology, the Divisional Director of Quality and Nursing, the Cardiology Matron, Senior Cardiac Radiographers, and the Head of Cardiac Physiology.
  • Maintain a safe working environment in compliance with Care Quality Commission (CQC) standards.
  • Collaborate with Infection Control to monitor standards and facilitate the development and implementation of policies and guidelines to uphold the highest infection control and prevention standards.
  • Ensure appropriate guidelines and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) are established to manage various clinical scenarios, including emergencies and deteriorating patients.
  • Ensure all staff comply with Trust policies and protocols, taking necessary actions when required.
  • Manage staff attendance and conduct return-to-work discussions following absences.
  • Lead on people management, including recruitment, retention, staff engagement, workplace culture, training, development, and performance management.
  • Create a positive and inclusive work environment, supporting effective communication between the catheterization lab and management team.
  • Analyze departmental performance, identifying patient needs, staff concerns, and opportunities for improvement.
  • Initiate emergency treatment as necessary and coordinate staff involvement in these situations.

Qualifications

Essential

  • Registered Nurse with NMC Registration
  • Mentorship Qualification
  • Completion of a Cardiology/Cath lab course
  • ILS/ALS Certification

Desirable

  • Completion of a clinical leadership program or equivalent

  • Experience in managing and leading a team within cardiology
  • Experience in catheterization lab procedures
  • Staff and resource management experience
  • Experience in staff performance management
  • Involvement in cardiac audit/research and implementation of best practices
  • Knowledge of current nursing issues and incident reporting/investigation

Desirable

  • Experience in managing team performance and capability
  • Experience in early-stage management of staff conduct and sickness absence
