Position Overview

An exceptional opportunity has arisen for a seasoned and driven Infection Control Nurse to become a pivotal member of the Infection Prevention & Control Team at Bedfordshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust as a Lead Infection Control Nurse Specialist.

This position is ideal for individuals currently operating at a senior level in infection prevention and control.

As a leading expert in infection control, the successful candidate will spearhead initiatives related to risk evaluation, monitoring, assessment, training, policy formulation, and guideline development. Additionally, the role encompasses managerial responsibilities, fostering the professional growth of the infection control nursing and administrative team.

The selected candidate will primarily work within the Trust but may occasionally need to engage with various healthcare facilities. The role requires flexibility, including weekend shifts approximately once every four weeks.

Key Responsibilities

Role Summary:

Collaborate closely with the Director of Infection Prevention and Control and the Head Nurse to design, deliver, and advocate for a comprehensive 7-day Infection Prevention & Control Service across the Trust.

The incumbent will operate under the guidance of the Head Nurse, providing extensive support to the Infection Prevention & Control team across various healthcare settings, encompassing both clinical and administrative tasks.

In the absence of the Head Nurse, the post holder will oversee daily operational functions and provide supervision and support to team members.

Ensure adherence to relevant health regulations and guidelines by implementing the annual Infection Prevention & Control strategy, policies, and protocols, thereby facilitating the achievement of Trust objectives.

Engage collaboratively with key stakeholders within the local healthcare community to address the evolving landscape of infection prevention, demonstrating innovative and effective leadership.

Communicate effectively with diverse individuals and groups, often addressing complex, sensitive, or contentious issues.

Core Responsibilities:

Infection Control Expertise:

  • Provide specialized knowledge and consultancy on infection-related matters to all Trust personnel, including clinical and operational staff.
  • Engage in ongoing professional development to enhance service quality and efficiency.
  • Evaluate and refine infection control measures throughout the Trust, promoting best practices and addressing barriers to compliance.
  • Advise on patient care related to infections, collaborating with nursing and medical teams to interpret complex clinical data.
  • Lead critical incident management related to infection control, including outbreak response and root cause analysis.
  • Maintain professional relationships with senior nursing staff to provide updates on infection control matters.
  • Develop innovative working methods to empower clinical teams in managing infection control responsibilities.

Patient Care:

  • Provide guidance to patients and their families on infection prevention measures through various communication methods.
  • Ensure consistent and accessible information is available for patients and visitors, regularly reviewing and updating materials.
  • Communicate effectively with patients and families, especially in emotionally charged situations.
  • Act as a resource for patients and families seeking information on infection control issues.

Leadership and Management:

  • Offer professional leadership to nursing and administrative staff within the Infection Prevention & Control Team.
  • Assist the Head Nurse in reviewing and evaluating the Infection Prevention & Control Strategy annually.
  • Support clinical service lines in investigations related to infection control.
  • Participate actively in the Joint Infection Prevention & Control Committee.
  • Represent the Trust at professional meetings and conferences, networking with peers.

Audit and Research:

  • Collaborate with the Infection Prevention & Control Team to develop the annual audit program.
  • Conduct proactive infection surveillance and audits to ensure compliance with policies.
  • Analyze research findings and implement relevant outcomes.

Quality Assurance:

  • Advise on isolation techniques and procedures to ensure patient safety.
  • Review national and local guidelines, advising the Trust on their implications.

Training and Development:

  • Support the Head Nurse in delivering continuous education programs on infection prevention.
  • Provide training to staff on effective infection control measures.

Professional Development:

  • Ensure all professional advice aligns with Trust policies and guidelines.
  • Engage in continuous professional development to enhance clinical knowledge and skills.
