About the Role

We are seeking a highly motivated and dedicated Occupational Therapy Assistant to join our dynamic team at King's College Hospital NHS Foundation Trust. As an Occupational Therapy Assistant, you will play a vital role in supporting patients to achieve their occupational therapy goals and return home.

Main Responsibilities
  • Work collaboratively with occupational therapists to carry out rehabilitation interventions and assist patients with daily living activities.
  • Provide treatment to patients following a pre-prescribed treatment plan, utilizing basic occupational therapy techniques.
  • Monitor patients' physical and cognitive function while undertaking activities and report changes to the occupational therapist.
  • Assist with the care of patients, including receiving them, transporting to treatment areas, and preparing drinks.
  • Teach patients and carers safe usage of equipment and develop clinical judgment skills regarding routine supply of equipment.
  • Assess the safety of patients while carrying out activities of daily living and document safety in patients' clinical notes.
  • Collect data from patients for recognized outcome measures and document for the occupational therapist to interpret.
Communication
  • Develop effective communication skills to take and relay messages accurately on the telephone and face-to-face with patients, relatives, healthcare professionals, and others.
  • Provide and receive information from patients, carers, and other professionals regarding patients' conditions and treatment progress.
  • Liaise with healthcare professionals and occupational therapists on a day-to-day basis in clinical areas of work, with regard to patient care.
Management and Administration
  • Maintain accurate and timely patient notes and activity records in accordance with departmental policy and ensure the safekeeping and confidentiality of these records.
  • Use departmental/Trust software EPR, PIMS, or Occupational Therapy Tools to manage patient data.
  • Undertake non-clinical induction of assistants and students as required.
  • Be an active team member by supporting other members, offering assistance, being flexible, and approachable particularly during changing service demands and staffing levels.
Physical Resources
  • Be responsible for the competent use and maintenance of all equipment used, to report defects in equipment in a timely manner to the Clinical Lead in the area and locate missing items.
  • Understand the function and use of departmental equipment and be able to use safely jointly with occupational therapy staff or independently with own patients.
  • Undertake routine light cleaning/tidying tasks of clinical equipment, wheelchairs, electrical equipment.
  • Administer any equipment loan monitoring system and liaise with maintenance engineers where appropriate.
Service Development
  • Follow Occupational Therapy department and Trust policies to ensure high-quality patient care.
  • Comment on changes to departmental policies, procedures, and service development as required.
Training, Education, and Research
  • Demonstrate capability in occupational therapy assistant skills by completing the tasks listed in the Assistant Induction and Competency Checklist within the first 3 months of employment.
  • Participate in the King's College Hospital KAD and fulfill its requirements for maintaining competencies to the required level.
  • Undertake in-service training to improve patient care and for personal development and organize programs on a rotational basis.
  • Be responsible for personal Life Long Learning and ensure that LL is reflective in clinical and non-clinical practice.
Person Specification
  • Experience working within health and social care settings.
  • Basic knowledge of the role of occupational therapy.
  • Experience providing support to other persons in need.
