Role Overview
In the capacity of Principal Independent Peer Review Assessor, you will engage in unique responsibilities. The Independent Nuclear Oversight (INO) Group, part of the Assurance Directorate, offers critical guidance and regulatory engagement concerning nuclear safety, radiological safety, management of radioactive waste, and assurance of adherence to legal and contractual obligations.

Key Responsibilities
Your primary focus will involve:

  • Executing Independent Peer Reviews in line with established protocols for safety documentation, methodologies, strategies, and guidance materials to comply with the BMS, Nuclear Site Licence, and MoD Authorisation.
  • Presenting Peer Review findings to the Nuclear Safety Committee on behalf of the Independent Peer Review Manager (IPRM) as necessary.
  • Overseeing the activities of consultants engaged for external Peer Review as the lead assessor.
  • Contributing to the development of IPR strategies and policies to address emerging challenges.
  • Drafting Peer Review reports that meet required standards and timelines, ensuring their integration into the SCaNDS/IPR database and the Licensee's documentation archive.

This position is full-time, comprising 35 hours per week, and offers hybrid working arrangements, typically involving three days in the office and two days working remotely.

Essential Qualifications and Experience

  • Broad experience in safety-related engineering within high-hazard industries.
  • Extensive background in safety analysis, preferably in a life-cycle support context, including Failure Mode, Effects, and Criticality Analysis (FMECA), fault tree analysis, etc., to support both probabilistic and deterministic safety evaluations.
  • Experience in developing, managing, and analyzing fault schedules and deriving safety functional requirements.
  • Proficiency in authoring safety case claims, arguments, and evidence to illustrate risk management and control measures.
  • A comprehensive understanding of Naval Base infrastructure, particularly in submarine engineering, is advantageous.

Qualifications Required

  • A degree in a relevant Scientific or Engineering discipline.
  • Chartered status with a recognized Professional Institution.
  • Completion of NUC Nuclear Plant Foundation Course Module 1 (or equivalent); Babcock will facilitate this training.
  • Completion of NUC Nuclear Fundamentals (Foundation) Course Module 2 (or equivalent); Babcock will facilitate this training.
  • Completion of NUC Introduction to Safety Engineering; Babcock will facilitate this training.

Security Clearance
The successful candidate must be able to obtain and maintain Security Check (SC) security clearance for this position.
