Role Overview
In the capacity of Principal Independent Peer Review Assessor, you will engage in a unique and impactful role. The Independent Nuclear Oversight (INO) Group, part of the Assurance Directorate, offers vital advice and regulatory oversight concerning nuclear safety, radiological safety, radioactive waste management, and compliance with legal and contractual obligations.

Your primary responsibilities will include:

  • Executing Independent Peer Reviews as per established protocols for safety documentation, policies, methodologies, strategies, and guidance documents to meet the BMS, Nuclear Site Licence, and MoD Authorisation requirements.
  • Presenting Peer Review findings to the Nuclear Safety Committee on behalf of the Independent Peer Review Manager (IPRM) as necessary.
  • Overseeing the work of subcontracted consultants during external Peer Reviews as the lead assessor.
  • Contributing to the development of IPR strategies and policies to address emerging challenges.
  • Preparing Peer Review reports that meet required standards and timelines, ensuring their integration into the SCaNDS/IPR database and the Licensee's documentation archive.

This position is full-time, requiring 35 hours per week, and offers flexible working arrangements, typically involving three days in the office and two days working remotely.

Essential Qualifications and Experience

  • Broad experience in safety-related engineering within high-hazard industries.
  • Extensive experience in safety analysis, preferably in a through-life support context, including Failure Mode, Effects, and Criticality Analysis (FMECA), fault tree analysis, etc., supporting both probabilistic and deterministic safety assessments.
  • Experience in developing, managing, and analyzing fault schedules and deriving safety functional requirements.
  • Proficiency in authoring safety case claims, arguments, and evidence to illustrate risk management and control.
  • A comprehensive understanding of Naval Base infrastructure, with detailed knowledge of submarine engineering being advantageous.

Required Qualifications

  • A degree in a relevant Scientific or Engineering discipline.
  • Chartered accreditation from an appropriate Professional Institution.
  • Completion of NUC Nuclear Plant Foundation Course Module 1 (or equivalent) (Babcock will facilitate this training).
  • Completion of NUC Nuclear Fundamentals (Foundation) Course Module 2 (or equivalent) (Babcock will facilitate this training).
  • Completion of NUC Introduction to Safety Engineering (Babcock will facilitate this training).

Security Clearance
The successful candidate must be able to obtain and maintain Security Check (SC) security clearance for this position.
