Position Overview
In the capacity of Principal Independent Peer Review Assessor, you will engage in a unique role within the Independent Nuclear Oversight (INO) Group, part of the Assurance Directorate. This group is pivotal in providing insightful guidance and regulatory oversight concerning nuclear safety, radiological safety, radioactive waste management, and ensuring compliance with legal and contractual obligations.

Key Responsibilities
Your primary responsibilities will include:

  • Conducting Independent Peer Reviews in line with established protocols for safety documentation, methodologies, strategies, and guidance documents necessary to comply with the BMS, Nuclear Site Licence, and MoD Authorisation.
  • Presenting Peer Review findings to the Nuclear Safety Committee on behalf of the Independent Peer Review Manager (IPRM) as required.
  • Overseeing the work of consultants engaged for external Peer Reviews as the lead assessor.
  • Contributing to the development of IPR strategies and policies to address emerging challenges.
  • Preparing Peer Review reports that meet required standards and timelines, ensuring their integration into the SCaNDS/IPR database and the Licensee's documentation archive.

This full-time role consists of 35 hours per week and offers hybrid working arrangements, typically involving three days in the office and two days working remotely.

Essential Qualifications and Experience
To be considered for the Principal Independent Peer Review Assessor position, candidates should possess:

  • Broad experience in safety-related engineering within high-hazard industries.
  • Extensive experience in safety analysis, preferably in a through-life support context, including Failure Mode, Effects, and Criticality Analysis (FMECA) and fault tree analysis to support both probabilistic and deterministic safety assessments.
  • Experience in developing, managing, and analyzing fault schedules and deriving safety functional requirements.
  • Proficiency in authoring safety case claims, arguments, and evidence to illustrate risk management and control.
  • A comprehensive understanding of Naval Base infrastructure, with detailed knowledge of submarine engineering being advantageous.

Educational Requirements
Candidates should have:

  • A degree in a relevant Scientific or Engineering discipline.
  • Chartered accreditation from an appropriate Professional Institution.
  • Completion of the NUC Nuclear Plant Foundation Course Module 1 (or equivalent), with opportunities for training provided by Babcock.
  • Completion of the NUC Nuclear Fundamentals (Foundation) Course Module 2 (or equivalent), with training support available.
  • Completion of the NUC Introduction to Safety Engineering, with training provided by Babcock.

Security Clearance
The successful candidate must be capable of obtaining and maintaining Security Check (SC) security clearance for this role.
