Forensic Medical Practitioner
Position Overview
We are seeking to enhance our Forensic Medical Practitioner Service. Since 2018, systematic mortality evaluations of all inpatient fatalities have been conducted, ensuring thorough examination of all inpatient deaths. We have established a strong collaborative relationship with local authorities and healthcare professionals to streamline the referral process for mortality reviews. This initiative has been successfully trialed with select practices and is now ready for broader implementation.
As a new Forensic Medical Practitioner, you will join a supportive and dynamic team of professionals from diverse clinical backgrounds to manage the anticipated increase in workload. Training is provided by the Royal College of Pathologists, with ongoing peer support from experienced practitioners. This role is not only fulfilling but also plays a crucial part in the death certification process, offering assistance to grieving families, ensuring proper referrals to the appropriate authorities, and fostering system-wide learning and improvement.
Key Responsibilities
We invite applications from qualified medical professionals who have been registered with the GMC for at least five years. The positions offer flexibility, requiring a minimum commitment of 8 hours per month. Both office-based and remote work arrangements can be accommodated, with final agreements made post-appointment. Some weekend availability may be necessary, depending on legislative requirements.
Forensic Medical Practitioners are trained physicians responsible for:
- Verifying that the Cause of Death is accurate and meets legal registration standards.
- Determining if a case requires referral to the appropriate authorities.
- Addressing any concerns regarding the death raised by involved parties.
- Escalating issues related to the quality of care received by the deceased for further investigation.
These roles are being established to prepare for the mandatory review of all deaths by a Forensic Medical Practitioner prior to registration.
