Position Overview

We are seeking a Finance Operations Analyst to become a vital member of our dedicated Finance Team.

This role offers flexibility, allowing for a combination of office and remote work arrangements.

The ideal candidate will possess experience with Oracle systems and have a strong background in finance team collaboration. Exceptional Excel skills and the ability to communicate effectively with diverse stakeholders are essential.

Preference will be given to candidates who are qualified or pursuing qualification in accounting, particularly with experience in NHS financial operations.

Key Responsibilities

Financial Reporting

Ensure the timely and accurate production of financial reports in accordance with established procedures and schedules by:

  • Preparing draft reports for review
  • Investigating discrepancies and rectifying errors promptly
  • Collaborating with budget holders to produce reliable forecasts
  • Delivering comprehensive monthly financial performance reports for assigned services

Provide financial insights and guidance to budget holders across various divisions, facilitating informed decision-making and escalating significant issues to the Senior Financial Analyst.

Conduct thorough financial analyses to clarify variances from planned budgets, incorporating relevant non-financial metrics.

Summarize progress on Cost and Income Improvement Programme (CIIP) initiatives within your areas of responsibility.

Assist in the preparation of final accounts by adhering to directives from the Head of Statutory Accounts.

Cost and Contract Management

Support the Cost and Income Accountant in developing business cases, service line reporting, and cost assessments by providing necessary cost data.

Understand the financial implications of customer contracts and collaborate with the Contracts Team and external partners to ensure compliance and assess the impact of contract modifications.

Financial Planning

Assist Service Managers and the Assistant Director of Finance in formulating business plans by contributing financial insights as needed.

Ensure timely completion of annual income and expenditure budgets for your designated services, in alignment with relevant managers.

Maintain a comprehensive audit trail for all budget modifications within your area of responsibility.

Contribute to the development of CIIP proposals, assessing feasibility and delivery timelines.

Provide detailed financial analysis and advice to support decision-making processes, particularly regarding the cost implications of operational changes.

Financial Oversight

Ensure compliance with robust financial controls by budget holders within your area of responsibility.

Maintain the integrity of financial records at all times.

Assist the Head of Finance in implementing recommendations from internal and external audits.

Support the Director of Finance and Local Counter Fraud Specialist in fostering an anti-fraud culture, identifying potential fraud cases, and ensuring adherence to internal controls to minimize fraud opportunities.

Information Management

In collaboration with the Senior Finance Analyst, design Excel spreadsheets for financial reporting and analysis, including complex functions as necessary.

Communication

Engage in regular communication with finance colleagues to achieve shared objectives.

Conduct meetings with budget holders and finance staff to review processes, resolve issues, and identify areas for improvement.

Assist Service Managers in analyzing and interpreting financial data and understanding the implications of financial policies.

Effectively communicate complex financial concepts to non-financial managers.

Provide informal training on budget and financial management to budget holders and other non-financial staff.

Team Development

Offer guidance and demonstrate processes to new or less experienced finance team members as needed.

Quality Assurance and Leadership

Stay current with technical knowledge and relevant issues, demonstrating ongoing professional development.

Participate in performance appraisals and the Knowledge and Skills Framework process.

Continuously review and suggest improvements to accounting and financial policies and procedures.

Compliance and Governance

Maintain strict confidentiality regarding patient, family, staff, and records information in accordance with data protection regulations.

Ensure compliance with Trust information governance and security policies when handling data.

Adhere to Trust risk assessment and management processes, infection control policies, and participate in mandatory training relevant to the role.

Engage in clinical and safeguarding responsibilities as required.

Represent the finance team in service meetings as necessary.

Candidate Profile

Experience

Essential

  • Experience working within a finance team
  • Proficiency in using computer-based general ledger systems for finance journal creation, report generation, and balance reconciliation
  • Experience in financial reporting relevant to this role, including variance analysis and trend reporting
  • Ability to manage individual workload effectively

Desirable

  • Experience in an NHS management accounts team or similar multi-disciplinary organization
  • Familiarity with Oracle accounting systems
  • Experience with payroll systems and business intelligence software

Skills and Knowledge

Essential

  • Ability to convey complex financial matters to non-financial personnel
  • Strong numerical, written, and verbal communication skills
  • Excellent analytical skills with the ability to interpret data
  • Advanced proficiency in Excel, including the ability to create and design financial spreadsheets using common functions
  • Good working knowledge of MS Word

Desirable

  • In-depth knowledge of financial aspects of community services
  • Familiarity with NHS financial systems, policies, and regulations

Qualifications

Essential

  • GCSE or equivalent in English and Maths
  • CCAB/CIMA equivalent experience relevant to the role

  • CCAB/CIMA qualification or part qualification with a goal to achieve full qualification
