Position Overview

Hours: 20 hours per week

The Clinical Support Assistant will collaborate with the nursing and administrative teams to facilitate the provision of clinical and administrative services, functioning as an integral member of the multi-disciplinary team, delivering care within their designated scope to the eligible patient population.

You will assist clinical personnel in delivering treatment, preventive care, health promotion, and patient education while also providing support to the administrative team as needed.

The Clinical Support Assistants play a crucial role, often serving as the initial point of contact for many patients, whether by performing venipuncture, BMI assessments, ECGs, or general health evaluations. You will be a collaborative team member eager to positively impact our patients' healthcare experience.

Core Responsibilities

The following are the primary responsibilities of the Clinical Support Assistant. Additional tasks may be assigned based on workload and staffing needs:

  • Conduct initial health assessments for new patients
  • Assist the practice nurse with health promotion initiatives
  • Perform baseline observations such as pulse oximetry, blood pressure, temperature, and pulse rate, ensuring accurate documentation
  • Facilitate routine and 24-hour blood pressure monitoring, providing guidance to patients as necessary
  • Carry out wound care, dressings, and other clinical tasks as required
  • Support the practice nurse in managing chronic disease clinics
  • Conduct BMI assessments as directed
  • Act as a chaperone when needed
  • Perform venipuncture
  • Administer flu vaccinations when trained
  • Conduct ECGs as requested
  • Ensure specimens are accurately recorded and prepared for transportation
  • Provide assistance during minor surgical procedures as required
  • Maintain clinical rooms, ensuring they are adequately stocked and prepared for each session
  • Regularly clean fridges in accordance with current guidelines
  • Ensure clinical waste is disposed of properly and sharps bins are replaced following the organization's infection prevention and control policy
  • Deliver opportunistic health promotion when appropriate

In addition to the primary responsibilities, the Clinical Support Assistant may be asked to:

  • Engage in practice audits as directed by the audit lead
  • Participate in local initiatives aimed at enhancing service delivery and patient care
  • Contribute to shared learning within the organization
  • Complete opening and closing procedures as per the duty roster

Qualifications

Essential

  • Healthcare qualification (level 3 or 4) or actively pursuing equivalent certification

Desirable

  • Completion of the HCA Care Certificate
  • Phlebotomy certification
  • Vaccination certification

Experience

Essential

  • Experience working with the general public
  • Experience in a healthcare environment
  • Familiarity with ECGs
  • Experience in venipuncture
  • Conducting new patient medical assessments, including height, weight, blood pressure, and pulse
  • Administering B12 injections
  • Understanding chaperone procedures
  • Ability to accurately document clinical notes

Desirable

  • Experience in a primary care setting
  • Support for INR/anticoagulation clinics
  • Wound care and removal of sutures and staples
