Position Overview

We are seeking a dedicated Specialist Perinatal Therapy Practitioner to join our dynamic South Perinatal Team. This role is essential in providing support to women in the community who are experiencing severe or complex mental health challenges during the perinatal period, which includes pre-pregnancy, pregnancy, and the early stages of motherhood.

As a member of our team, you will collaborate closely with a Band 6 Occupational Therapist and contribute to the advancement of personalized care for our clients. Our service is committed to a holistic approach, addressing the needs of the entire family during this transformative life stage.

Key Responsibilities

Your role will encompass both general and specialized duties:

General Responsibilities:

  • Act as the lead professional and care coordinator for a designated caseload of women.
  • Conduct comprehensive Perinatal Initial Assessments and participate in multidisciplinary team feedback sessions.
  • Engage in the Perinatal Duty/Triage Rota during standard working hours.
  • Collaborate within a multidisciplinary team, including psychiatrists and psychologists.
  • Provide supervision to junior staff members.

Specialized Occupational Therapy Responsibilities:

  • Manage OT referrals, assessments, goal setting, treatment planning, and evaluations utilizing the Model of Human Occupation (MOHO) framework.
  • Implement OT interventions focusing on role and identity adjustment, functional re-ablement, co-occupations with infants, sensory needs, and vocational support.
  • Facilitate group sessions, including Antenatal and Post-Natal Wellbeing groups, with additional groups in development.
  • Oversee the work of qualified staff and ensure effective OT interventions are delivered.
  • Mentor OT students during their practical placements.
  • Collaborate with the Band 7 Lead to address the needs of the OT service.
  • Promote the role of Occupational Therapy within the team.

Job Responsibilities

As a Specialist Perinatal Therapy Practitioner, you will:

  • Contribute to the ongoing development of the South Perinatal Mental Health Service.
  • Work directly with women, their infants, and families facing severe and complex perinatal mental health conditions.
  • Assist in the creation and delivery of Perinatal Mental Health Training and Education for other staff groups.
  • Collaborate with professionals from other services to ensure comprehensive care.
  • Provide expert advice and consultation to colleagues regarding the management of women experiencing severe or complex mental health conditions during the perinatal phase.
  • Attend professional meetings to offer insights and guidance as needed.
  • Establish strong working relationships with key stakeholders, including maternity services and health visiting teams.
  • Work autonomously and as part of a collaborative team.
  • Coordinate care for women experiencing severe or complex mental health conditions.
  • Conduct specialized perinatal initial assessments.

Qualifications and Experience

Essential:

  • BSc level equivalent training in Occupational Therapy.
  • HCPC Professional Registration as an Occupational Therapist.
  • Experience in a mental health setting.
  • Experience in multidisciplinary collaboration.
  • Ability to manage challenging situations and conduct risk assessments.

Desirable:

  • Membership in the Royal College of Occupational Therapists.
  • Evidence of continued professional development.
