Position Overview

The Sterile Services Division at Great Western Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust plays a crucial role in supporting various medical departments, including operating theatres, endoscopy units, and community health services. We are currently seeking dedicated individuals to join our team, which is committed to maintaining high standards of patient care through effective sterilization processes.

This role is not directly patient-facing; however, it is centered around ensuring patient safety and quality service delivery. The work environment is dynamic, requiring adaptability to fluctuating workloads while maintaining focus on the tasks at hand. Candidates should be comfortable working in a setting where they may encounter blood and other clinical materials.

Key Responsibilities

The Sterile Services team is responsible for the comprehensive management of surgical instruments, including:

  1. Collecting, inspecting, and cleaning surgical instruments and medical devices from various clinical areas.
  2. Transporting clean and used endoscopes between local facilities using Trust vehicles.
  3. Assembling and verifying medical devices across a range of surgical specialties, adhering to established Standard Operating Procedures to ensure accuracy and efficiency prior to sterilization.
  4. Collaborating with colleagues to share information and support operational needs.
  5. Performing all duties in compliance with departmental policies and procedures.
  6. Assisting in the training of new staff members by demonstrating key processes.
  7. Organizing daily work tasks and making informed decisions based on job-related information.
  8. Maintaining accurate records and following written procedures as part of the departmental quality management system.
  9. Visiting various departments to requisition and deliver sterile supplies, as well as managing external customer requests.
  10. Ensuring proper storage and rotation of sterile packs to facilitate efficient service delivery.
  11. Managing stock for external customers as required.
  12. Adhering to health and safety regulations to ensure a safe working environment.
  13. Complying with the Trust's immunization policy, including vaccinations against Hepatitis B.

Qualifications and Experience

Essential

  • A solid educational background, ideally at GCSE level or equivalent.
  • Experience in packaging, assembly, or customer service roles.
  • Familiarity with working in a healthcare environment.
  • Previous exposure to quality management systems and standard operating procedures.

Desirable

  • NVQ in Decontamination or similar qualifications.
  • Experience in cleanroom operations.
  • Knowledge of decontaminating medical equipment.

Skills and Attributes

Essential

  • Basic IT proficiency.
  • Strong manual dexterity and attention to detail.
  • Ability to maintain focus on tasks for extended periods.
  • Capability to identify faults and damages in products.
  • Willingness to learn and retain information about a wide range of complex medical instruments.
  • Self-management skills to ensure consistent quality output within designated timeframes.
  • Understanding of barcode tracing systems and the importance of accurate scanning processes.

Desirable

  • Experience with Wassenburg Automated Endoscope Reprocessors (AERs).
  • Familiarity with the disinfection of flexible endoscopes.
