About the Solicitor's Office and Legal Services (SOLS)

The Solicitor's Office and Legal Services (SOLS) provides comprehensive legal support across HMRC, including:

  • Conducting independent reviews of decisions made by HMRC upon customer requests.
  • Managing tribunal and civil litigation across a broad spectrum of services.
  • Engaging in the development of new legislation.
  • Drafting statutory instruments and various legal documents.
  • Providing legal counsel to Executive Committee members and staff.

Additionally, we offer technical accountancy and forensic services to HMRC, oversee the Compliance Accountants and Insolvency Professions, and manage Ministerial Correspondence and Freedom of Information requests.

Position Summary

We are seeking Review Officers to join our Solicitor's Office and Legal Services (SOLS) team. The successful candidates will be integral members of the Late Penalties Reasonable Excuse Team, located in Nottingham. This role demands strong decision-making abilities, effective communication skills, and adaptability to varying business requirements.

Key Responsibilities

The successful candidates will:

  • Conduct statutory reviews of late penalty appeals, evaluating reasonable excuses submitted by customers or traders contesting penalties for late submissions.
  • Utilize the Litigation and Settlement Strategy to generate precise and timely review decisions based on the provided reasonable excuses, ensuring comprehensive responses to customers.
  • Engage in a desk-based role, analyzing HMRC-held records and making necessary updates to databases and IT systems.
  • Collaborate with both internal and external stakeholders.

Additional Information

HMRC is open to flexible working arrangements and will consider requests where feasible, balancing operational and customer service needs. Please note that while we strive to accommodate flexibility, not all requests may be granted based on business requirements.

Occasional travel across the UK may be necessary, including overnight stays for business purposes.

Benefits

In addition to a competitive salary of £25,082, HM Revenue and Customs contributes £6,772 towards membership in the Civil Service Defined Benefit Pension scheme.
