About the Solicitor's Office and Legal Services (SOLS)

Within SOLS, we deliver comprehensive legal services across HMRC, which includes:

  • Conducting independent reviews of decisions made by HMRC as requested by customers under legislative provisions.
  • Managing tribunal and civil litigation across a broad spectrum of services.
  • Engaging in the development of new legislation.
  • Drafting statutory instruments and various legal documents.
  • Providing legal counsel to Executive Committee members and staff.

Additionally, we offer technical accountancy and forensic services to HMRC, oversee the Compliance Accountants and Insolvency Professions, and manage Ministerial Correspondence and Freedom of Information requests.

Position Summary

We are seeking Review Officers to join our Solicitor's Office and Legal Services (SOLS). The successful candidates will be integral members of the Late Penalties Reasonable Excuse Team in Nottingham. This role demands strong decision-making and communication abilities, along with the flexibility to adapt to varying business requirements.

Key Responsibilities

The successful candidates will be responsible for:

  • Conducting statutory reviews on late penalty appeals, evaluating reasonable excuses submitted by customers for penalties related to late submissions of returns or payments.
  • Utilizing the Litigation and Settlement Strategy and guidelines to generate precise and timely review decisions based on the reasonable excuses provided, ensuring comprehensive responses to customers.
  • Engaging in a desk-based role that involves analyzing HMRC-held records, performing data analysis, and making necessary updates to databases and IT systems.
  • Collaborating with both internal and external stakeholders to facilitate effective communication and resolution.

Additional Information

HMRC welcomes applications from individuals seeking flexible working arrangements and will consider requests where feasible, in line with operational and customer service requirements. While we strive to accommodate all requests for flexible work, approval will depend on business capabilities.

Occasional travel across the UK may be necessary, including overnight stays for business purposes. This position is available only at the specified location, and alternative locations are not offered.

Your office location is contractual, and successful candidates are expected to attend the designated office as required by the business. Consideration of how to meet this requirement should be made prior to application, and any concerns should be discussed with the vacancy holder before accepting a role.

Benefits

In addition to a salary of £25,082, HM Revenue and Customs contributes £6,772 towards membership in the Civil Service Defined Benefit Pension scheme.
