About the Role

We are seeking a highly skilled and compassionate Children and Young People's Mentor to join our team at Rising Sun Domestic Violence and Abuse Service. As a key member of our CYP team, you will play a vital role in delivering services to children and young people affected by domestic violence and abuse.

Key Responsibilities
  • Service Delivery
    • Work one-to-one with young people (aged 11 to 15 years) affected by domestic violence and abuse, providing emotional support and guidance.
    • Build positive working relationships with local schools to deliver our program, promoting healthy relationships and spotting red flags.
    • Hold a caseload and respond to the needs of the young people we support, demonstrating empathy and understanding.
    • Work in a mentoring capacity with children and adolescents, focusing on domestic abuse and its impact.
    • Recognize the impact of domestic abuse on young people and families, showing a commitment to trauma-informed practice.
    • Support and facilitate groups in schools and the community, promoting healthy relationships and emotional well-being.
    • Work flexibly with young people, meeting with them in various settings, such as schools, colleges, and community centers.
    • Work creatively and flexibly to support vulnerable and challenging client groups.
    • Build relationships with partner agencies, such as social care, early help, schools, police, and health services.
    • Attend meetings on behalf of Rising Sun, promoting multi-agency working and building positive relationships with external agencies.
    • Work as part of a team, supporting colleagues and building positive working relationships.
    • Be available to work some evenings and weekends as required.
  • General
    • Work professionally and to a high standard, setting an example to the wider team and external partners.
    • Have a good knowledge and understanding of using IT programs, such as Word and Excel.
    • Complete administrative tasks as required, ensuring paperwork and evaluations are up-to-date.
    • Demonstrate a commitment to continued professional development, staying up-to-date on research, relevant legislation, policy, and practice.
    • Protect the safety and security of Rising Sun, service users, staff, volunteers, and buildings, and maintain confidentiality.
    • Uphold the rights of women, children, and young people who have experienced domestic abuse, assessing their needs and safety.
    • Be proactive and solution-focused, paying attention to detail.
    • Participate in supervision, training, and meetings as required.
    • Ensure the effective implementation of Rising Sun's policies and procedures, upholding our core values.
    Requirements
    • A relevant qualification in working with children and young people (desirable).
    • A thorough understanding of violence against women and girls, with a particular focus on domestic abuse (coercive control, sexual violence, so-called 'honour-based violence', forced marriage, and FGM).
    • Experience of working with young girls and adolescent females, focusing on understanding emotions, shame, and gender identity (desirable).
    • Excellent understanding of the impact of domestic violence on children and young people, families, and communities.
    • Thorough knowledge of safeguarding practice, procedures, and legislation.
    • Good understanding of the operation of agencies working together to support survivors, such as social services, police, MARAC, etc. (desirable).
    Skills and Experience
    • Excellent listening and communication skills, with a wide range of people of all ages and backgrounds.
    • The ability to work well within a team and work independently, maintaining confidentiality.
    • A flexible, proactive approach, with good prioritization skills.
    • Good project and time management skills, with the ability to work effectively under pressure and to deadlines.
    • Good data collection, monitoring, and IT skills, including word processing and using databases and spreadsheets.
