Position Overview:

We are seeking a proactive and skilled Research Manager to facilitate the monitoring, evaluation, and learning initiatives of a prominent National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR) portfolio focused on clinical and applied health research funding.

The NIHR is financed by the Department of Health and Social Care (DHSC) and aims to establish a health research framework where the NHS fosters exceptional talent, utilizing state-of-the-art facilities to conduct groundbreaking research that addresses the needs of patients and the public. The NIHR Research Infrastructure serves as a foundation to promote research by cultivating an environment conducive to early-stage and applied research. Our portfolio encompasses research expertise, specialized facilities, a dedicated research delivery workforce, and essential support services, with an annual investment exceeding £606 million in various five-year infrastructure funding schemes.

Role Objectives:

Reporting to the Senior Research Manager for Monitoring and Evaluation within the Infrastructure team, the successful candidate will assist in developing and executing strategies to integrate innovative methods for award-level data monitoring and reporting across the research infrastructure portfolio. This includes implementing scheme-level monitoring, evaluation, and learning methodologies, particularly focusing on impact evaluation.

We are looking for an individual with experience in handling diverse data sources (metrics, narrative, and financial reporting), a foundational understanding of research impact, and a comprehensive view of academia, funding, and project management. Collaboration with the Infrastructure team and the Monitoring, Evaluation, and Learning team is essential, along with effective communication with internal and external stakeholders, demonstrating critical thinking skills.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Assist in the annual reporting process: Manage the annual reporting cycle, including maintaining forms and guidance documents, organizing workshops for award holders, and compiling annual reports. Review and provide feedback on reports to ensure progress against objectives and governance of awards.
  • Enhance annual reporting approaches: Oversee and support the ongoing evaluation of current processes and develop a tailored approach to annual reporting that ensures adequate assurance and current evidence of progress and impacts. Manage the identification and implementation of a new digital solution for reporting.
  • Data analysis and reporting: Support quantitative and qualitative data analysis for projects within the infrastructure portfolio, including strategic reviews, and where applicable, create visual representations of progress using collected data.
  • Provide versatile support: Adopt a flexible approach to work tasks, assisting with additional responsibilities across the team during peak periods.

Qualifications:

Essential Criteria:

  • A Master's or PhD in biomedical or health sciences research (or significant equivalent experience).
  • A foundational understanding of the processes involved in monitoring funding awards and evaluating programs.
  • Experience in one of the following environments:
    • Major research funding/management
    • Research management within the NHS or higher education institutions, including clinical trial/study coordination in applied health
    • Pharmaceutical or biotechnology sectors
    • Academic settings
  • Strong planning and organizational skills, with the ability to prioritize and manage multiple tasks while meeting challenging deadlines.
  • Proven ability to write reports and analyze data with meticulous attention to detail.
  • A collaborative team player with the capacity to foster effective working relationships.

Desirable Criteria:

  • Current knowledge of the UK's health and care research and policy landscape.
  • Experience in research/grants management and/or monitoring and evaluation of research.
  • Experience in stakeholder management across multiple organizations.

Flexibility:
This position is advertised at 1.0 FTE, and the organization is open to accommodating suitable requests for flexible working hours. Part-time and/or job share opportunities may be considered.

Contract Length: This role is offered for a 12-month period as maternity cover.
