Position Overview

The Lead Cardiac Physiologist will play a crucial role in delivering high-quality echocardiography services across multiple healthcare facilities. This position requires collaboration with fellow physiologists to ensure the effective operation of the clinical service.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide comprehensive support to the echocardiography department, ensuring optimal service delivery.
  • Supervise, train, and mentor junior staff in performing transthoracic echocardiograms (TTEs) to maintain high standards of practice.
  • Assist in advanced procedures including transoesophageal echocardiograms (TOEs), bubble studies, and stress echocardiograms.
  • Foster a culture of continuous learning and professional development within the non-invasive cardiology team.
  • Participate in a 7-day echocardiography service, including weekend shifts on a rotational basis.
  • Work towards achieving British Society of Echocardiography (BSE) accreditation.

Clinical Duties

  • Engage in the full spectrum of technical echocardiography services, aiming for BSE accreditation.
  • Manage daily workloads effectively to ensure the smooth operation of the technical service.
  • Maintain high standards of technical proficiency in non-invasive cardiac procedures.
  • Collaborate with lead echocardiographers to prioritize inpatient echocardiogram requests.
  • Oversee the operational readiness of equipment and ensure cleanliness and maintenance of resources.
  • Identify and report equipment malfunctions promptly to maintain service continuity.
  • Provide detailed interpretations and technical reports for echocardiograms performed.
  • Respond effectively to emergency situations, ensuring patient safety and care.
  • Contribute to research initiatives as required.
  • Stay updated with advancements in clinical physiology and integrate new knowledge into practice.
  • Ensure individualized patient care is delivered consistently.

Managerial Responsibilities

  • Act as a deputy for the Operations Manager and Principal Cardiac Physiologist when necessary.
  • Oversee the management and development of junior cardiac physiology staff.
  • Assist in recruitment and retention efforts within the department.
  • Support the organization and performance of the echocardiography service, including rota management.
  • Collaborate with management to meet government targets in cardiac physiology services.
  • Contribute to the development of departmental protocols and guidelines to achieve accreditation.

Educational and Professional Development

  • Commit to ongoing personal and professional development, identifying training needs in collaboration with management.
  • Maintain professional accreditation through continuous education and training.
  • Participate in the training and development of junior staff to ensure competency in echocardiography.

Administrative Duties

  • Manage patient records and appointments using departmental databases.
  • Perform clerical tasks including filing, photocopying, and communication with staff and patients.
  • Ensure effective stock control and resource management within the department.
