The East Suffolk and North Essex NHS Foundation Trust is seeking applications from dedicated and skilled professionals to become part of our vibrant and supportive Gastroenterology department.

Our Clinical Delivery Group (CDG) for General Surgery and Gastroenterology is led by specialists, ensuring high-quality clinical governance at each site.

Within the Surgery and Anaesthetics Division, the Gastroenterology department collaborates closely with upper gastrointestinal and colorectal surgery, along with other surgical disciplines.

Our gastroenterology consultants are integral members of a multi-disciplinary team, utilizing state-of-the-art endoscopy facilities and equipment. We are committed to delivering an efficient and welcoming service to our community while adapting to advancements in technology.

We offer an Enhanced Welcome package that includes an additional £13,000 and relocation support to facilitate your transition to our trust.

Key Responsibilities

The position comprises 10 Programmed Activities, including 2 Supporting Professional Activities (SPAs). Any additional Programmed Activities will be discussed and agreed upon with the successful candidate.

Each gastroenterologist is responsible for managing medical gastroenterology patients on a designated ward for a period of 5 weeks, conducting two ward rounds weekly. The inpatient care is supported by a team of Gastroenterology Specialty Registrars, junior doctors, and nurse specialists.

Off-ward sessions may be allocated for additional service needs, such as extra clinics or endoscopy lists. Most consultants currently exceed the 10PA contract, but adjustments can be made to accommodate a 10PA commitment while maintaining an average of 10 PAs weekly over a rolling rota. There is no general medical on-call duty associated with this role.

Job Duties

The successful candidate will serve as a Consultant in Gastroenterology, specializing in luminal and inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). Outpatient and day-case procedures are supported by a modern Endoscopy Unit staffed by nurse endoscopists, with plans for further development. We conduct three screening lists weekly, alongside capsule endoscopy, ERCP, and EUS services. A Urea Breath testing service for Helicobacter pylori is also available.

Our Diagnostic Imaging Department offers a comprehensive array of diagnostic imaging services, including multi-slice CT and MRI scanners, as well as various interventional procedures. The Nuclear Medicine Department provides a full range of radio nucleotide investigations, and small bowel ultrasound has recently been added to our IBD services.

The ideal candidate will possess extensive experience in managing gastrointestinal and hepatobiliary emergencies, with a subspecialty interest in luminal and IBD gastroenterology. Proficiency in diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopy, including colonoscopy, is essential. We encourage the development of specialist interests to enhance service provision and support expansion.

The successful appointee will collaborate with five full-time gastroenterologists, participating in a 1:6 weekend triage system, managing the GI ward, and contributing to a 1 in 12 on-call rota for GI bleeding across sites, with a guaranteed day off following each on-call duty.

Person Specification
  • Registration as a Specialist in Gastroenterology and General Medicine
  • MRCP or equivalent qualification
  • Clinical training and experience equivalent to UK CCT in Gastroenterology and General Internal Medicine
  • Capability to provide expert clinical opinions on a variety of gastroenterology and endoscopy issues
  • Ability to take full responsibility for patient care independently
  • Willingness to work within the Trust and NHS performance frameworks
  • Experience in supervising junior doctors and nurse specialists
  • Capacity to apply research findings to clinical scenarios
  • Completion of a postgraduate thesis
  • Minimum five years of supervised training in an appropriate SpR equivalent program
  • Encouragement to develop a specialist interest to enhance current services
  • Ability to supervise postgraduate research initiatives
  • Publications in peer-reviewed journals
