We are seeking dedicated and passionate professionals to become part of our collaborative team within the Gastroenterology division.
The Gastroenterology department operates under the General Surgery and Gastroenterology Clinical Delivery Group (CDG), which features specialized clinical leadership for each area of expertise.
Our department functions as a vital component of the Surgery and Anaesthetics Division, encompassing both upper gastrointestinal and colorectal surgical practices alongside other surgical disciplines.
Our gastroenterology specialists collaborate within a multidisciplinary framework, utilizing state-of-the-art endoscopic facilities and equipment. Our mission is to deliver a high-quality, efficient, and welcoming service to our community while advancing gastroenterology services in response to the fast-paced evolution of medical technology.

Key Responsibilities
The role encompasses 10 Programmed Activities, inclusive of 2 Supporting Professional Activities (SPAs). Any additional Programmed Activities will be discussed and agreed upon with the successful candidate.
Each gastroenterologist is responsible for managing all medical gastroenterology patients on a designated ward for a period of 5 weeks. During this time, two ward rounds are conducted weekly. The care of in-patients is supported by a team of Gastroenterology Specialty Registrars, junior doctors, and nurse specialists.
When not on the wards, the gastroenterologist may utilize ward round sessions for additional service provisions, such as extra clinics or endoscopy lists, depending on service requirements. While many consultants in the department work beyond the standard 10 Programmed Activities, adjustments can be made for those preferring to adhere to a 10 PA contract, ensuring an average of 10 PAs per week over a rolling rota period. There is no general medical on-call duty associated with this position.

Job Responsibilities
The successful candidate will serve as a Consultant in Gastroenterology with a focus on luminal and inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). Outpatient and day-case procedures are supported by a modern Endoscopy Unit, staffed by nurse endoscopists, with plans for further development.
Our Diagnostic Imaging Department offers a comprehensive array of diagnostic services, including advanced multi-slice CT and MRI scanning, as well as a variety of interventional procedures. Additionally, our Nuclear Medicine Department provides a full range of radio nucleotide investigations.
The ideal candidate will possess extensive experience in managing gastrointestinal and hepatobiliary emergencies, with a subspecialty interest in luminal and IBD gastroenterology. Proficiency in diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopy, including colonoscopy, is essential. We encourage the development of specialized interests to enhance service offerings and support service expansion.
It is anticipated that the successful appointee will collaborate with a team of five full-time gastroenterologists, participating in a weekend triage rota and providing on-call support for GI bleeding across multiple sites, with a day off following each on-call duty.
Essential Qualifications
- Specialist Registration in Gastroenterology and General Medicine
- MRCP or equivalent qualification
- Clinical training and experience equivalent to UK CCT in Gastroenterology and General Internal Medicine
- Ability to provide expert clinical opinions on a range of gastroenterological issues
- Capacity to take full responsibility for patient care
- Willingness to work within the Trust and NHS performance frameworks
- Experience in supervising junior doctors and nurse specialists
- Ability to apply research findings to clinical practice
