Ipswich, Suffolk, United Kingdom NHS Full time £13,000
Consultant in Gastroenterology Luminal IBD

The East Suffolk and North Essex NHS Foundation Trust is seeking dedicated and skilled professionals to enhance our vibrant Gastroenterology department. This role is primarily based at Ipswich Hospital, where you will be part of a collaborative and supportive team.

Our Clinical Delivery Group (CDG) for General Surgery and Gastroenterology is led by specialty-level clinical leaders, ensuring high standards of care across all sites. The Gastroenterology department operates within the Surgery and Anaesthetics Division, which includes upper gastrointestinal and colorectal surgery, among other surgical specialties.

As a consultant, you will work within a multi-disciplinary team, utilizing state-of-the-art endoscopy facilities and equipment. Our goal is to provide an efficient and welcoming service to our community while adapting to the rapid advancements in gastroenterology.

We offer an Enhanced Welcome package that includes an additional £13,000 and relocation support to facilitate your transition to our trust.

Key Responsibilities

The position encompasses 10 Programmed Activities, including 2 Supporting Professional Activities (SPAs). Additional Programmed Activities can be negotiated based on the needs of the service and the successful candidate's preferences.

Each gastroenterologist is responsible for managing medical gastroenterology patients on a designated ward, conducting two ward rounds weekly. Support is provided by two Gastroenterology Specialty Registrars, one CT1/2, one VTS, and one Foundation Year doctor.

Off-ward sessions may be allocated for additional clinical services, such as extra clinics or endoscopy lists, depending on service demands. Most consultants in the department currently work beyond the standard 10 PA contract; however, adjustments can be made to accommodate a 10 PA commitment while maintaining a balanced workload.

Job Duties

The successful candidate will serve as a Consultant in Gastroenterology, specializing in luminal and inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). Outpatient and day-case procedures are supported by a modern Endoscopy Unit staffed by nurse endoscopists, with plans for further development.

Our diagnostic imaging department is equipped with advanced multi-slice CT and MRI scanners, alongside a range of interventional services. The Nuclear Medicine department offers comprehensive radio nucleotide investigations, and small bowel ultrasound has recently been integrated into our IBD services.

Candidates should possess extensive experience in managing gastrointestinal and hepatobiliary emergencies, with a subspecialty interest in luminal and IBD gastroenterology. Proficiency in diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopy, including colonoscopy, is essential. We encourage the development of specialized interests to enhance service provision and support growth.

The successful appointee will collaborate with five full-time gastroenterologists, participating in a weekend triage rota and providing on-call support for GI bleeding across sites, with a guaranteed day off following on-call duties.

Person Specification
  • Registration as a Specialist in Gastroenterology and General Medicine
  • MRCP or equivalent qualification
  • Clinical training and experience aligned with UK CCT requirements in Gastroenterology and General Internal Medicine
  • Capability to provide expert clinical opinions on a variety of gastroenterological issues
  • Ability to independently manage patient care

  • Experience in supervising junior doctors and nurse specialists
  • Capacity to apply research findings to clinical scenarios
  • Completion of a postgraduate thesis
  • Minimum five years of supervised training in an appropriate SpR equivalent program
  • A specialist interest that contributes to service enhancement is encouraged
  • Ability to oversee postgraduate research initiatives
