The East Suffolk and North Essex NHS Foundation Trust is seeking dedicated and skilled professionals to enhance our vibrant Gastroenterology department, primarily located at Ipswich Hospital.
Our Clinical Delivery Group (CDG) in General Surgery and Gastroenterology features specialty-level clinical leadership, with one Clinical Lead designated for each specialty across our sites.
The Gastroenterology department operates as a sub-unit within the Surgery and Anaesthetics Division, encompassing upper gastrointestinal and colorectal surgery alongside various other surgical specialties.
Our gastroenterology consultants collaborate within a multidisciplinary team, benefiting from state-of-the-art endoscopy facilities and equipment. The department is committed to delivering an efficient and approachable service to our local community while adapting to the rapid advancements in technology.
Our Enhanced Welcome package includes an additional £13,000 and relocation costs to express our gratitude for your choice to work with us.
Key ResponsibilitiesThe position comprises 10 Programmed Activities, inclusive of 2 Supporting Professional Activities (SPAs). Any additional Programmed Activities required will be discussed and agreed upon with the successful candidate.
Each gastroenterologist will dedicate 5 weeks to managing all medical gastroenterology patients on a designated GI ward, conducting two ward rounds weekly. Support for inpatient care is provided by two Gastroenterology Specialty Registrars, one CT1/2, one VTS, and one Foundation Year doctor.
When not on the wards, the ward round sessions may be allocated for additional service needs, such as extra clinics or endoscopy lists, depending on current service demands. While most consultants exceed the 10PA contract, adjustments can be made for those preferring to adhere to a 10PA contract, ensuring an average of 10 PAs per week over a rolling rota period. There is no general medical on-call commitment associated with this role.
Job DutiesThe successful candidate will serve as a Consultant in Gastroenterology, specializing in luminal and inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). Outpatient and day-case procedures are supported by a modern Endoscopy Unit, staffed by four nurse endoscopists, with plans for further development. We conduct three screening lists weekly, alongside capsule endoscopy, ERCP, and EUS procedures. A Urea Breath testing service for Helicobacter pylori is also available.
Our Diagnostic Imaging Department offers a comprehensive array of diagnostic multi-slice CT and MRI scanners, as well as a variety of interventional services. The Nuclear Medicine Department provides a full range of radio nucleotide investigations, with small bowel ultrasound being a recent addition to our IBD services.
The ideal candidate will possess extensive experience in managing gastrointestinal and hepatobiliary emergencies, along with a subspecialty interest in luminal and IBD gastroenterology. Proficiency in diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopy, including colonoscopy, is essential. We actively promote the development of specialist interests to enhance service provision and support expansion.
It is anticipated that the successful appointee will collaborate with the existing team of five full-time gastroenterologists, participating in a 1:6 weekend triage for GI patients, managing the GI ward, and contributing to a 1 in 12 on-call rota for GI bleeding across sites, with a day off following each on-call duty.
Candidate Requirements- Specialist Registration in Gastroenterology and General Medicine
- MRCP or equivalent qualification
- Clinical training and experience equivalent to the requirements for UK CCT in Gastroenterology and General Internal Medicine
- Ability to provide expert clinical opinions on a range of gastroenterology and endoscopy issues
- Capacity to take full and independent responsibility for patient care
- Willingness to work within the Trust and NHS performance frameworks and targets
- Experience supervising junior doctors and nurse specialists
- Ability to apply research findings to clinical scenarios
- Postgraduate thesis completion
- Five years of supervised training in an appropriate SpR equivalent program
- Encouragement for a specialist interest to enhance current services
- Ability to oversee postgraduate research
- Publications in peer-reviewed journals
