The East Suffolk and North Essex NHS Foundation Trust is seeking dedicated and passionate professionals to become integral members of our vibrant Gastroenterology department. This role is primarily situated at Ipswich Hospital, where you will collaborate with a diverse and skilled team.

Our Clinical Delivery Group (CDG) for General Surgery and Gastroenterology is led by specialty-level clinical leadership, ensuring a high standard of care across all sites. The Gastroenterology department operates as a specialized unit within the Surgery and Anaesthetics Division, encompassing upper gastrointestinal and colorectal surgery along with various other surgical specialties.

As a consultant, you will be part of a multi-disciplinary team, benefiting from access to state-of-the-art endoscopy facilities and equipment. Our mission is to deliver an efficient and compassionate service to our local community while adapting to the rapid advancements in gastroenterology technology.

Key Responsibilities

The position comprises 10 Programmed Activities, including 2 Supporting Professional Activities (SPAs). Any additional Programmed Activities will be discussed and agreed upon with the successful candidate.

Each gastroenterologist will spend 5 weeks managing all medical gastroenterology patients on a designated GI ward, conducting two ward rounds weekly. Support for inpatient care will be provided by two Gastroenterology Specialty Trainees, one Core Trainee, one Vocational Training Scheme doctor, and one Foundation Year doctor.

When not on the wards, the ward round sessions may be utilized for supplementary service provisions, such as additional clinics or endoscopy lists, depending on service requirements. While many consultants in the department work beyond the standard 10 Programmed Activities, adjustments can be made for those preferring to adhere to a 10PA contract, ensuring an average of 10 PAs per week over a rolling rota period. There is no general medical on-call commitment associated with this position.

Job Duties

The successful candidate will serve as a Consultant in Gastroenterology with a subspecialty interest in luminal and inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). Outpatient and day-case investigations are supported by a modern Endoscopy Unit, which includes four nurse endoscopists, with plans for further development. We conduct three screening lists weekly, along with capsule endoscopy, ERCP, and EUS services. A Urea Breath testing service for Helicobacter pylori is also available.

Our Diagnostic Imaging Department offers a comprehensive array of diagnostic multi-slice CT and MRI scanners, in addition to a wide range of interventional services. The Nuclear Medicine Department provides extensive radio nucleotide investigations, and small bowel ultrasound has recently been added to our IBD services.

The ideal candidate will possess extensive experience in managing gastrointestinal and hepatobiliary emergencies, along with a subspecialty interest in luminal and IBD gastroenterology. Proficiency in diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopy, including colonoscopy, is essential. We encourage the development of specialist interests to enhance current service offerings and support service expansion.

It is anticipated that the successful appointee will collaborate with the existing team of five full-time gastroenterologists, participating in a 1:6 weekend triage for the GI ward and providing a 1 in 12 on-call rota for GI bleeding across sites, with a day off following each on-call duty.

Candidate Requirements
  • Registration on the Specialist Register for Gastroenterology and General Medicine
  • MRCP or equivalent qualification
  • Clinical training and experience equivalent to that required for UK CCT in Gastroenterology and General Internal Medicine
  • Ability to provide expert clinical opinions on a variety of gastroenterology and endoscopy-related issues
  • Capacity to take full and independent responsibility for patient care
  • Willingness to work within the Trust and NHS performance frameworks and targets
  • Experience supervising junior doctors and nurse specialists
  • Ability to apply research findings to clinical scenarios
  • Postgraduate thesis
  • Five years of supervised training in an appropriate SpR equivalent training program
  • A specialist interest aimed at enhancing or improving current services is encouraged
  • Capability to supervise postgraduate research
  • Publications in peer-reviewed journals
