POSITION SUMMARY

We are seeking a visionary and dynamic leader to oversee the flagship Family Service at HMP Altcourse. This innovative program is the first of its kind, integrating creative interventions for incarcerated men, tailored family counseling, and practical assistance for families visiting their loved ones. In this pivotal role, you will collaborate with both internal and external teams to redefine family support within the criminal justice landscape, aiming to foster a cultural transformation at HMP Altcourse and beyond.

ABOUT THE ORGANIZATION

Social Interest Group (SIG) specializes in delivering arts-based, therapeutically informed group work, with a legacy of 30 years in the prison system. We are looking for a proactive individual who is dedicated to developing creative, family-centered approaches to effectively support those in crisis. You will be part of a reflective and dynamic team of facilitators, counselors, and family liaison workers, helping individuals impacted by the criminal justice system to build practical skills for positive change.

WORK SCHEDULE

37.5 hours per week, Monday to Friday, with flexible hours during program delivery.

CANDIDATE PROFILE

The ideal candidate will possess a strong passion for arts-based interventions, along with outstanding communication, organizational, and supportive skills. Your approach will focus on building and nurturing relationships, recognizing their essential role in personal growth. You will utilize creative methods, including group work and arts techniques, to inspire and facilitate positive behavioral changes for those in custody and their families.

You should be adept at leading and motivating teams, thriving in a fast-paced environment where your proactive and adaptable nature can shine. Your leadership will demonstrate a commitment to delivering high-quality, person-centered support, grounded in a trauma-informed framework and a non-judgmental attitude.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Management

  • Provide exceptional support and line management to staff, offering guidance and advice to foster their development.
  • Oversee the management and leadership of employees throughout the entire employee lifecycle.
  • Promote a culture of learning, development, and evaluation within the team.
  • Establish strong internal relationships and ensure consistent communication across the organization.

Operational Duties

  • Ensure the service operates in alignment with the standards set by Safe Ground, Social Interest Group, and other relevant stakeholders.
  • Implement necessary measures to establish and deliver programs as part of the core curriculum.
  • Support the team in achieving performance targets and objectives.
  • Participate in and contribute to meetings related to the program, convening meetings as needed.
  • Coordinate with the team and participants to identify and maximize opportunities for program development in line with the organizational strategic plan.
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with internal and external partners.
  • Collaborate with the team to monitor, gather feedback, evaluate, and enhance programs for continuous improvement.
  • Perform administrative and other duties as required.

KEY CRITERIA

Essential Qualifications:

  • Experience in arts education, dramatherapy, or applied theatre and/or education
  • Experience in a prison or criminal justice setting, or a similar role
  • Proficiency in IT and ability to learn new software programs
  • Understanding of therapeutic group work techniques
  • Knowledge of the social and societal marginalization affecting individuals in the criminal justice system

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in line management
  • Relevant professional qualifications, such as NVQ/Diploma Level 2 in Health & Social Care/Community Justice/Arts/Dramatherapy or equivalent
