Job Description

Job Title: Senior Biomedical Scientist - Haematology

Job Summary:

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Senior Biomedical Scientist to join our Haematology team at University Hospitals Sussex NHS Foundation Trust. The successful candidate will be responsible for leading a team of Biomedical Scientists and Laboratory Assistants, ensuring the smooth operation of the laboratory, and maintaining the highest standards of quality and patient safety.

Main Responsibilities:

  • Quality Management: Ensure the laboratory maintains UKAS accreditation status by implementing and maintaining quality management systems, conducting quality control activities, and participating in internal audits.
  • Training and Development: Provide training and supervision to Biomedical Scientists and Laboratory Assistants, maintaining staff competency logs, and ensuring that all staff members are up-to-date with the latest techniques and technologies.
  • Staff Management: Manage the section's staffing, including recruitment, training, and performance management, to ensure that the team is equipped to meet the demands of the laboratory.
  • Analyser Maintenance: Ensure that all analysers are properly maintained, troubleshoot any issues, and coordinate with engineers for maintenance and repairs.
  • Section Organisation: Organise the section's workload to ensure that all tasks are completed efficiently, including planning and implementing analytical downtime.
  • Stock Control: Manage the ordering and inventory of reagents and materials, ensuring that the laboratory has the necessary supplies to maintain its operations.

Person Specification:

  • HCPC Registration: Must be registered with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) with no fitness to practice concerns or limits to practice.
  • Qualifications: Must have completed the IBMS Specialist Diploma (or CPSM/HPC log book and oral exam) and a Master's degree (MSc) or equivalent higher-level qualification in an appropriate speciality.
  • Experience: Must have at least 4 years of continuous experience post-IBMS Specialist Diploma (or CPSM/HPC) in a UK NHS diagnostic laboratory, with experience in Haematology laboratory settings being essential.
