Position Overview

Are you an experienced Speech and Language Therapist with a focus on pediatric dysphagia and a background in acute care settings? Our Inpatient and Feeding Speech and Language Therapy Team is seeking a dedicated professional to join our ranks in a permanent full-time role.

As part of our dynamic and collaborative team of 11 Speech and Language Therapists and a SLT Assistant, you will provide essential feeding and communication support across 23 inpatient wards and 9 specialized outpatient feeding clinics. Our team is integrated within the larger Speech and Language Therapy department at Great Ormond Street Hospital, which consists of over 30 professionals committed to excellence in patient care.

Main Responsibilities

  • Deliver specialized speech and language therapy services to inpatients facing feeding and communication disorders stemming from a variety of rare and complex conditions, ensuring the highest quality of clinical care.
  • Provide expert knowledge in the selection, application, and interpretation of objective assessments related to oral-motor and pharyngeal aspects of feeding.
  • Offer guidance and support to patients, families, and caregivers regarding congenital, acute, and chronic feeding and communication challenges, often in sensitive and ethical contexts concerning treatment options, including palliative care and quality of life considerations.
  • Maintain regular communication with the SLT line manager and utilize established supervision frameworks for service delivery and complex clinical case management.
  • Oversee the management of referrals in collaboration with senior colleagues, ensuring timely responses to referring agencies in conjunction with the SLT administrative team.
  • Engage in the clinical training of undergraduate and postgraduate speech and language therapy students, as well as the education and training of staff from various disciplines, in consultation with the Team Leader and Head of Speech and Language Therapy.

Essential Qualifications

  • Registered Member of the Royal College of Speech and Language Therapists
  • Health Professions Council license to practice
  • Advanced level dysphagia training
  • Training in clinical and student supervision

Desirable Qualifications

  • Postgraduate courses in feeding difficulties at a master's equivalent level
  • SLT Clinical Master's Degree

Essential Experience and Knowledge

  • Experience in supervising clinical students and clinical supervision procedures
  • Experience in interdisciplinary team collaboration
  • Experience utilizing both informal and formal speech and language assessment and feeding techniques for children across various age groups
  • Knowledge of a wide range of communication assessment tools relevant to inpatient caseloads
  • Understanding of cultural considerations impacting SLTs working with this patient population

Desirable Experience and Knowledge

  • Assessment, diagnosis, treatment, and management of neonates and older children with communication and/or feeding difficulties
  • Evidence of providing SLT interventions for feeding and communication through various formats and experience in an acute hospital environment
  • Principles of dysphagia assessment and management in pediatrics

  • Exceptional communication skills with the ability to recognize when to seek assistance
  • Ability to convey assessment outcomes and management plans to relevant professionals, including pediatricians, schools, and other therapists
  • Strong interpersonal skills, including active listening, sustained focus, and empathy for patients and families with complex communication needs
  • Demonstrated expertise in managing feeding and communication challenges related to children with complex special needs
  • Self-organizational skills, including effective caseload prioritization
  • Proficient in IT applications, including Microsoft Office software
