POSITION SUMMARY

The role of the Treasurer encompasses not only the responsibilities of a Trustee but also a comprehensive oversight of the financial operations of women@thewell. The Treasurer is tasked with ensuring that effective financial strategies, controls, and procedures are established and maintained, providing regular updates to the Board regarding the financial status of the organization. The Board collectively holds responsibility for these financial matters.

Ideal Candidate Profile

We seek a finance expert with a solid understanding of charity finance, or at least a strong willingness to learn, complemented by relevant commercial experience and insights into small charities. The ideal candidate will be a strategic thinker capable of weighing risks against opportunities. Excellent communication skills are essential, particularly the ability to present financial data in an engaging manner to those without a finance background. The candidate should be prepared to engage actively in areas such as forecasting, budget creation, and auditor interactions.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assist in the preparation and evaluation of budgets, internal management accounts, and annual financial reports for the Board of Trustees.
  • Ensure accurate accounting records are maintained and that sound accounting practices and controls are enforced.
  • Develop and implement robust financial policies, including those related to reserves and cost management.
  • Monitor the financial sustainability of the charity, ensuring compliance with financial controls and systems, while regularly collaborating with the Chief Executive and Finance Manager. Assess the financial implications of the charity's strategic initiatives.
  • Support the establishment and evaluation of the charity's risk management framework. Collaborate with the finance manager to lead the selection and coordination with external auditors.
  • Assist the finance manager in preparing financial statements in accordance with the requirements of relevant regulatory bodies, such as the Charity Commission. Keep the Board informed about its financial obligations and work with the Chief Executive to enhance the Board's financial literacy.

Trustee Responsibilities

As part of the trustee team, the Treasurer shares in the collective responsibility for ensuring that the charity effectively pursues its mission, operates in good faith, and utilizes its resources wisely. This includes each trustee:

  • Ensuring the charity fulfills its public benefit objectives;
  • Complying with the charity's governing documents and legal requirements;
  • Acting in the best interests of the charity while avoiding conflicts of interest;
  • Managing the charity's resources prudently;
  • Exercising independent judgment;
  • Demonstrating reasonable care, skill, and diligence;
  • Ensuring accountability for the charity's actions.
