About the Role

We are seeking a highly experienced and strategic leader to join our team as the Head of Marine Risk Management at DHL GBS (UK) Limited. As a key member of our Insurance & Risk Management (IRM) department, you will be responsible for developing and overseeing the risk financing operation for marine liability and all-risk worldwide commercial risk exposure emanating from the trading activities of DHL Group's worldwide businesses.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop and maintain a deep understanding of the Group's service portfolio, divisional strategies, and organizational structures.
  • Execute marine all-risk and marine liability risk financing strategies across all divisions worldwide.
  • Establish and implement strategies that have mainly a medium-term (5-10 years) impact on business results.
  • Oversee the delivery of risk financing strategies, optimizing the use of balance sheet, captive, fronting insurance, and risk transfer mechanisms.
  • Accountable for the underwriting result, including management reporting of loss ratios, claim trends, and market share/development.
  • Develop the marine book and drive internal market share while maintaining 'break-even' underwriting targets and maximizing DHL Group's balance sheet protection and operating divisions' EBIT targets.
  • Oversee the pricing of marine risks ensuring a consistent, compliant and timely structure for referrals from junior programme managers, ad-hoc quotations, mid-term adjustments and annual renewals; Pricing of risk includes contract risk referrals, cargo all risk rating, transport and logistics marine risks (warehouse liability, cargo liability, customs liability, errors & omissions etc).
  • Lead and manage a team of subject matter experts.
  • Contribute to the non-life insurance risk strategy and collaborate with other stakeholders to ensure the seamless delivery of risk management services.

Stakeholder Management

  • Divisional boards at global and regional levels, with a strong focus on commercial business development.
  • Global and regional IRM stakeholders, country and regional senior management, and other relevant functions including finance, legal, security, operations, trade compliance, and business development leadership.
  • External service providers, including fronting insurers, claims handlers, insurance brokers, and advisors.

Management Responsibility

Manage and lead the marine risk function, consisting of 3 full-time employees.

Your Profile

  • University degree and/or holding a professional qualification in insurance (, ACII, FCII, CPCU, CEBS, IEBA) or other business management qualification.
  • 15+ years of experience in marine underwriting within a global multinational insurance company, broker, or in-house risk function.
  • Experience in transport and logistics risk management and strategy within a global multinational insurance company, broker, or in-house risk function.
  • Extensive background in account management, servicing, placement, and negotiation of marine transport and logistics insurance coverages, as well as marine insurance and international trade law.
  • Extensive knowledge of or experience in the logistics and/or supply chain business.
  • Proven track record in developing, coaching, and leading teams in a multinational environment.
  • Exceptional data analytics, project management, time management, and workload management skills.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills, with the ability to articulate technical content to a non-technical audience.
