Job Overview

We are seeking a Manager of Commercial Rights and Business Affairs to become a vital part of the BBC's Commercial, Rights and Business Affairs (CRBA) team within the CRBA Commissioning (Scripted & Acquisitions) division. This role is a Fixed Term Contract and offers flexibility in location, with options available across various primary bases in the UK.

The CRBA team is responsible for managing and integrating the BBC's Intellectual Property, strategic initiatives, and business interests through proficient negotiation, contract management, and commercial transactions. The team comprises several specialized units embedded within various content sectors, including Television, Radio & Music, Children's & Education, and Sport, as well as a central CRBA unit. These teams collaborate on essential business functions crucial to the commissioning, production, and distribution of the BBC's services and content.

The Scripted & Acquisitions unit is a diverse team tasked with commissioning, licensing, acquiring, and overseeing the production and broadcast of scripted content across all BBC channels, including its availability on BBC iPlayer.

This position presents an exciting opportunity during a transformative period for the BBC. You will play a key role in enhancing audience engagement and maximizing commercial returns in a rapidly evolving digital and global marketplace.

While you may primarily focus on a specific CRBA area and workload, you may also be required to engage in other CRBA functions to expand your knowledge, skills, and experience.

All CRBA team members are considered 'agile workers,' with an expectation of working an average of 2-3 days per week in BBC facilities.

Key Responsibilities

As a CRBA Manager for Content (including Drama and Comedy commissioning and Acquisitions), you will collaborate closely with Senior CRBA Managers and the Director of CRBA. Your support will be crucial for the CRBA team and genre-specific business and commissioning teams, with a strong emphasis on contractual matters. This role is pivotal in shaping the strategy for acquiring, optimizing, and leveraging content Intellectual Property. Furthermore, you will serve as the primary resource for negotiation, legal drafting, and contract management within the Content commercial team and across the Content CRBA team as necessary.

Are You the Ideal Candidate?

To excel in this position, you should possess experience in providing comprehensive legal and Intellectual Property advice, along with demonstrable expertise in the commissioning process, rights issues related to digital media, and content acquisition agreements. A solid understanding of media business and legal affairs concerning content commissioning is essential, complemented by experience across television and digital platforms.

You should also have substantial knowledge and experience in the production process, as well as in negotiating and contracting with talent and their representatives. Familiarity with key rights frameworks and regulatory guidelines is crucial.

Additionally, you should have extensive experience in managing multiple projects to completion within established timeframes and budgetary constraints. Your strong analytical abilities, creative problem-solving skills, and decision-making capabilities will support your success in this role. Excellent interpersonal skills and experience in relationship management will enable you to effectively influence both internal and external stakeholders, backed by sophisticated negotiation and communication skills.
